Regional Workshop On The Role Of Parliaments In Combating Hiv Aids

The SADC Parliamentary Forum organised a three day workshop for Members of Parliamen focusing on the role of parliaments in combating HIV/AIDS. Among issues discussed include: Identifying and defining the role and capacity of the SADC Parliamentary Forum, its Standing Committee on HIV/AIDS, Committees of parliaments and parliamentarians and in addressing the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the SADC region; and Developing a SADC wide Plan of Action on the role of paliaments in combating HIV/AIDS.

Analyzes the 12 International Guidelines on HIV/AIDS and Human Rights and gives best practice examples of their implementation.

What should Parliaments do about screening for AIDS and detecting genetic diseases? How do the media report and comment on information in this field? Twelve papers commissioned from national parliamentarians and parliamentary staff from the then twelve member states of the Union describe how information about the progress and potentialities of the revolution in human microbiology, and its actual and potential ethical and social effects, is at present acquired and handled.
