Recent Advances in Prolactin Research summarizes the current knowledge of prolactin (PRL), PRL receptor, PRL-dependent signaling pathways, the role of PRL in oncogenesis and PRL crosstalk with other oncogenic factors. The chapters are written by experts in these fields and focus on identifying and reviewing timely experimental findings that provide new insights into the expanding role of PRL in the pathophysiology associated with a variety of human conditions. Prolactin is a peptide hormone that is best known for its role in lactation. Prolactin also has an influence on hematopoiesis and angiogenesis, and is involved in the regulation of blood clotting through several pathways. Although PRL was discovered more than 80 years ago, the understanding of PRL signaling and its relationship to various pathologies is still very incomplete. PRL is not only a pituitary hormone with an important role in reproduction, but PRL also acts as a cytokine, modulating a wide variety of physiological processes. For example, data gathered during the last decade have demonstrated that locally produced PRL acts as the autocrine/paracrine factor and plays a contributory role during breast oncogenesis. In fact, the scientific and clinical communities have suggested that the manipulation of the PRL axis may lead to the successful treatment of breast cancer. However, recent work has demonstrated that the role of the PRL axis is much more complex than first envisaged.

This unique book will serve as a valuable resource for clinicians and researchers interested in prolactin physiology and pathophysiology and those who are involved in the care of patients with related disorders, including hyperprolactinemia and prolactin-secreting pituitary adenomas. Timely and up-to-date, it opens with a review of the historical aspects of prolactin research and a discussion of pituitary anatomy and physiology. Several chapters examine basic and translational aspects of prolactin physiology, focusing on recent developments and future directions. The main portion of the book is comprised of chapters presenting the clinical aspects of prolactin excess or deficiency, with particular emphasis placed on prolactin-secreting pituitary adenomas and co-secreting tumors. Concluding chapters address prolactin-secreting pituitary adenomas in special populations – women in the preconception period or during pregnancy, children and adolescents, and men – as well as plurihormonal and aggressive adenomas and carcinomas. Written and edited by experts in the field, Prolactin Disorders will be a ready reference for a diverse array of professionals, from basic scientists to clinical investigators and clinicians from several specialties, including specialists in endocrinology, neurosurgery, radiation oncology and neuro-oncology.

The selection of prolactin as the subject of the Midwest Con ference on Endocrinology was not only dictated by the recent ad vances in prolactin research but also by the long tradition in that particular area of Endocrinology in the laboratory of C.W. Turner at the University of Missouri. Therefore, it seems only appropri ate that these proceedings of the Tenth Midwest Conference on En docrinology are dedicated to the memory of this scientist, deceased in August 1975 before completion of this volume, whose pioneer in vestigations have contributed substantially to the advancement of our knowledge in many areas of Endocrinology and who played a major role in the early phases of prolactin research. This volume contains a review of the early studies in Turner's laboratory and the latest results obtained by some of the leading research workers in this area and should be a fitting memory to C.W. Turner. Some of the manuscripts printed here were prepared after the conference was held and include material of more recent origin. Much of the delay in publication was due to the length of time de voted to preparation of these manuscripts. It is an authentic privilege to have the opportunity to assemble and edit a new volume on "Prolactin," the first in several decades to be devoted to this fascinating hormone in all its aspects. The obvious clinical rationale for understanding prolactin (PRL) is the frequent occurrence of prolactinomas, the most common type of pituitary tumor. Fortunately, medical management of prolactinomas can be based on our under standing of the physiology of hypothalamic control of the lactotroph. Armed with this knowledge, therapies for proiactinomas are highly successful and well tolerated. Be cause of the historical and practical importance of knowledge regarding the hypothala mus-Iactotroph axis, the first chapters of this volume are dedicated to reviewing the physiology, development, and cell biology of lactotroph regulation. Chapters focusing on prolactinomas and related clinical issues follow these. PRL is the primary hormone that is responsible for "parental care" in many verte brate species. This reproductive strategy is not unique to mammals, but it has devel oped through evolution to be the central distinguishing feature of the mammalian life cycle. Among the mammals, mice have become the most effective research species in recent years. This can be traced to the development of a wide range of methods for manipulating mouse genetics, and thereby influencing development, physiology and behavior. Mice also provide a profound illustration of the physiological challenges faced in maternity. Female mice undergo a post-partum estrous, and often are both pregnant and lactating simultaneously.

Recent Progress in Hormone Research, Volume 39 presents the proceedings of the 1982 Laurentian Hormone Conference. The book presents papers on the ovarian triad of the primate menstrual cycle; the measurement of local glucose utilization and its use in localization of functional activity in the central nervous system of animals and human; and the impact of estrogens on hypothalamic nerve cells. Recent Progress in Hormone Research, Volume 29 covers the proceedings of the 1972 Laurentian Hormone Conference held in Mont Tremblant, Province of Quebec, Canada, on August 27-September 1, 1972. The book discusses the studies on sex differentiation in mammals; male pseudohermaphroditism in the laboratory Norway rat; and androgen metabolism and mechanism of action in male pseudohermaphroditism. The text also describes the mechanism of initiation of parturition in the ewe; the neurovascular regulation of the anterior hypophysis; and microtubules and beta cell secretion. The role of microtubules and microfilaments in thyroid secretion; the functional and morphological alterations produced in target cells by anti-inflammatory steroids; and protein kinases are also considered.
