Recent Advances In Matrix And Operator Theory

This volume comprises the proceedings of the International Workshop on Operator Theory and Its Applications held at the University of Connecticut in July 2005.

This book consists of invited survey articles and research papers in the scientific areas of the “International Workshop on Operator Algebras, Operator Theory and Applications,” which was held in Lisbon in July 2016. Reflecting recent developments in the field of algebras of operators, operator theory and matrix theory, it particularly focuses on groupoid algebras and Fredholm conditions, algebras of approximation sequences, C* algebras of convolution type operators, index theorems, spectrum and numerical range of operators, extreme supercharacters of infinite groups, quantum dynamics and operator algebras, and inverse eigenvalue problems. Establishing bridges between the three related areas of operator algebras, operator theory, and matrix theory, the book is aimed at researchers and graduate students who use results from these areas.

The present book is a memorial volume devoted to Peter Jonas. It displays recent advances in modern operator theory in Hilbert and Krein spaces and contains a collection of original research papers written by many well-known specialists in this field. The papers contain new results for problems close to the area of research of Peter Jonas: Spectral and perturbation problems for operators in inner product spaces, generalized Nevanlinna functions and definitizable functions, scattering theory, extension theory for symmetric operators, fixed points, hyperbolic matrix polynomials, moment problems, indefinite spectral and Sturm-Liouville problems, and invariant subspace problems. This book is written for researchers and postgraduates interested in functional analysis and differential operators.

This book offers peer-reviewed articles from the 19th International Conference on Operator Theory, Summer 2002. It contains recent developments in a broad range of topics from operator theory, operator algebras and their applications, particularly to differential analysis, complex functions, ergodic theory, mathematical physics, matrix analysis, and systems theory. The book covers a large variety of topics including single operator theory, C*-algebras, diffrential operators, integral transforms, stochastic processes and operators, and more.

This book contains a selection of carefully refereed research papers, most of which were presented at the fourteenth International Workshop on Operator Theory and its Applications (IWOTA), held at Cagliari, Italy, from June 24-27, 2003. The papers, many of which have been written by leading experts in the field, concern a wide variety of topics in modern operator theory and applications, with emphasis on differential operators and numerical methods. The book will be of interest to a wide audience of pure and applied mathematicians and engineers.

Many developments on the cutting edge of research in operator theory and its applications, and related areas of mathematics, are reflected in this collection of original and review articles. Particular emphasis lies on the applications of operator theory to basic problems in distributed parameter systems, mathematical physics, wavelets, and numerical analysis. These 35 refereed articles report on recent and original results in various areas of operator theory and connected fields, many of them strongly related to contributions of Sz.-Nagy. The scientific part of the book is preceeded by fifty pages of biographical material, including several photos.

The papers selected for publication here, many of them written by leaders in the field, bring readers up to date on recent achievements in modern operator theory and applications. The book’s subject matter is of practical use to a wide audience in mathematical and engineering sciences.

This volume is dedicated to the memory of Israel Glazman, an outstanding personality and distinguished mathematician, the author of many remarkable papers and books in operator theory and its applications. The present book opens with an essay devoted to Glazman's life and scientific achievements. It focusses on the areas of his unusually wide interests and consists of 18 mathematical papers in spectral theory of differential operators and linear operators in Hilbert and Banach spaces, analytic operator functions, ordinary and partial differential equations, functional equations, mathematical physics, nonlinear functional analysis, approximation theory and optimization, and mathematical statistics. The book gives a picture of the current state of some important problems in areas of operator theory and its applications and will be of interest to a wide group of researchers working in pure and applied mathematics.
