Excerpt from Profile of American Politics: Readings in American Government If government of the people, by the people and for the people is the most ex citing form of government in the world, and we believe it is, the study Of American government should itself be an exciting experience. Convinced Of this, we have taken measures to make this collection Of essays lively, interesting and timely. Since American democracy is a dynamic and ever-changing phenomenon we have focused upon essays which reveal the active elements of political decision without neglecting readings which deal with the legal and formal structure Of decision. The very title, Profile of American Politics, suggests our bias toward the dynamic factors. Our approach emphasizes political, economic and moral factors without overlooking legal, constitutional, historical and other essential ingredients in politics. Excerpt from Readings in American Government and Politics While the materials come from a large variety of sources, I have chosen wherever possible from the writings of men who have had a practical experience in the conduct of government. I have also sought to illustrate the larger and more permanent features of our political system, rather than to furnish a handy guide to the law and practice. To facilitate the work of the student and teacher, I have endeavored to make each extract clear, compact, and self-explanatory, and in several instances I have condensed considerably by omitting obscure allusions and passages not bearing directly on the principles which I have wished to bring out. To avoid marring the pages with unsightly points, I have merely placed an asterisk at the head of each selection which has been subjected to this process of condensa tion. The side notes are intended primarily to help the teacher in conducting class discussions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from American Democracy: Its History and Problems When this purpose is fully determined upon, the stu dent who necessarily already has many ideas about democratic government must prepare his mind for the reception of new material on the subject in order that he may relate what he learns to his previous experience. NO knowledge is Of value unless it can be organized with what is already known. As a help in this process Of getting ready, the Stu dent should make a careful preliminary examination of what he knows Of the subjects taken up under the chap ter headings. By so doing, he will be made conscious of his own power and Of his own needs and, as a con sequence, his thought will become more purposeful and definite. Excerpt from American Democracy In seeking truth we must be plain and simple, ever patient, ever responsive, yet firm and steadfast as the foundations of eternity itself and when instinct, reason, and conscience agree in pointing out the right, we must follow it with absolute fidelity, in a uniform and barmo nions progression, to the bitter end, even if it breaks our hearts or tears the flesh from our bones, for this alone is the way to happiness, and happiness is all we hope for in this state of life or the next. Excerpt from Readings in American Democracy This volume is designed to accompany the editor's Problems in American Democracy, and the choice and arrangement of the material have been influenced by the plan of that text. In the preparation of this volume the effort has been to secure the advantages of a book of readings, and at the same time to avoid some of the drawbacks common to such compilations. In this connection the special features of the book may be referred to briefly: The editor has attempted to strike a judicious compromise between too long and too short selections. It is intended that each selection shall prove sufficiently extended to convey a fair and adequate idea of the author's point of view; on the other hand, the pressure for space in the volume, and the desirability of suppressing material not bearing directly upon the point involved, have led to careful elimination, and, in some cases, to bracketed insertions. It need not be added that, in such cases, care has been taken not to distort the sense of the original. Despite the wide range of many of the chapters, the editor has attempted to choose and to arrange the selections so that each chapter will constitute a logical and unified narrative. It is hoped, further, that the volume has gained something of the continuity of a text from the fact that an editorial paragraph has been used, not only to introduce each selection, but to connect and to weave together the two selections between which it stands. To avoid the unsightliness of type of varying sizes, the same size of type has been used for both editorial introductions and the selections. Care has been taken, however, to indicate precisely where each editorial introduction stops and the selected reading begins. To help the student to understand the selections, and to facilitate reference, marginal notes have been employed throughout the book. A number of questions on the readings is supplied at the end of each chapter. The volume is provided with an index.
