Excerpt from Catalogue of a Collection of United States Silver Coins, the Property of William H. Cottier, Esq. Of Buffalo, N. Y: Comprising Nearly the Entire Series of American Silver Coinage, Inclusive a Large Number of Rare Pattern Pieces, Experimental Coins, Etc., To Which Is Added a Selection of Rare American and Foreign Coins and Medals, in Gold, Silver, and Copper Concerning the quality of the coins offered, I have but little to say; the following pages will Speak for themselves. Many of the fine earlier dates have never before been offered at auction here, being importations from abroad - these will, no doubt, find appreciative buyers: others will be recognized as having formed part of well-known American cabinets. In the statement of the condition of the coins, while mindful of whatever good points offered themselves to my observation, I have endeavored to describe them just as they are; but Mr. Cottier exercised such excellent judgment in his selections that this task was rendered comparatively easy, especially in the case of the proofs of later years and of the pattern pieces, which are, with barely an exception, all that the most fastidious collector could wish. The selection of Foreign gold, and of American and Foreign silver coins and medals, which follows the Cottier collection proper, and also the first seventy numbers, comprise the cream of an im portant invoice lately received by me from Paris. An examination of the pages of this part of the sale will show that quite a number of the rarities have never before been offered in the United States, while several are totally unknown. With the hope to obtain a recognition of the merits of this catalogue by your representation at the sale. Excerpt from Catalog of the Valuable Collection of United States Gold and Silver Coins of the Late Charles Gordon Zug, Esq., Of Pittsburgh In his early boyhood, the late Charles Gordon Zug, began his collection of coins, and gave much attention to the interesting study of his country's coinage. He was born in Pittsburg, June 10th, 1872, and died at the age of 36 years, August 10, 1908, from heart failure caused by over-exertion through excessive bicycle riding while a lad. He was engaged in the iron manufacturing business with his father in Pittsburg. During the last years of his life he turned his atten tion particularly to the United States Gold Series, and though lacking a few of the higher rareties, he formed a splendid collection of the mint series of gold coins - the Eagles, including the rare 1798 and 1804, the Half Eag les, 1823, '25 and '30, and the Quarter Eagles, 1796, '97, 1821 and '26; Three Dollars - the rareties of 1865, '73 and '76, the last a brilliant proof, and his complete set of Dollars. He added largely to this series at my sale of the great collection of the late David S. Wilson, March, 1907, where Mr. Zug was one of the largest buyers, his purchases amounting to $3000, and I have preserved the record of the previous ownership of the pieces from this collection, by referring to this source in the present Catalogue. I can supply a few copies of the Wilson Sale Catalogue with price list at and with plates at the latter illustrating many additional coins of the Zug Sale. The Wilson Collection contained 600 pieces of U. S. Gold, and is the largest sale of the series ever held. He had not added much to the Silver Series during recent years, but it contains both varieties of the very rare 1796 Half Dollar in good condition. "[The book contains] one medal engraving from a daguerreotype, by Joseph Saxton, of the front of the Mint, using a medal ruling machine, to copy a relief executed by Christian Gobrecht from the daguerreotype...This book is considered the first publication from a daguerreotype in the United States. A remarkable example of this little used process and of major importance in the history of photography and photomechanical printing in the United States. Joseph Saxton not only produced the oldest extant daguerreotype now in the United States, but also invented the modification to the ruling machine used for this publication."--Hanson Collection catalog, p. 8.
