This book explores the ways in which the early rabbis reshaped biblical laws of ritual purity and impurity and argues that the rabbis’ new purity discourse generated a unique notion of a bodily self. Focusing on the Mishnah, a Palestinian legal codex compiled around the turn of the third century CE, Mira Balberg shows how the rabbis constructed the processes of contracting, conveying, and managing ritual impurity as ways of negotiating the relations between one’s self and one’s body and, more broadly, the relations between one’s self and one’s human and nonhuman environments. With their heightened emphasis on subjectivity, consciousness, and self-reflection, the rabbis reinvented biblically inherited language and practices in a way that resonated with central cultural concerns and intellectual commitments of the Greco-Roman Mediterranean world. In the twentieth century, interpreters often supposed that the Fourth Gospel replaced purity with faith in Jesus. This dissertation begins from a different premise, namely, that the Fourth Gospel, like other early Jewish writings, employs conceptions and practices of purification as a way to make sense of life before God in the world. After an initial chapter weighing different scholarly theories of purity for the interpretation of the Fourth Gospel, focus is given to John the Baptist as an agent of ritual purification (John 1:19-34; 2:1-11; 5:31-38), Jesus as the agent of moral purification (1:19-34; 3:1; 9:1-10:21), and the disciples of Jesus as ones who are (or are not) made morally pure by Jesus (13:1-38; 15:1-17). In these chapters, the Fourth Gospel is found to employ diverse and wide-ranging biblical and early Jewish traditions of purity in order to make some of its most significant claims about Christology, soteriology, and ethics. In the Fourth Gospel, purity is what God provides to enable Israel's perception of divine revelation in Jesus, to make possible Israel's participation in the life of God mediated by Jesus, and to give the capacity to keep the commandment of Jesus. Purity is one of the ways that the Fourth Gospel guards continuity with the past while placing surprising conditions on participating in Israel's future.
