Flash Photolysis and Pulse Radiolysis: Contributions to the Chemistry of Biology and Medicine presents the interaction of radiation with biomolecules, which is either beneficial o deleterious to life. This book discusses the biochemical reactions that are not radiation-induced by selectively generating certain types of free radicals present in normal metabolic processes. Organized into nine chapters, this book begins with an overview of the principle of both pulse radiolysis and flash photolysis with photoelectric detection. This text then examines the applications of flash photolysis and pulse radiolysis to the chlorophylls, bile pigments, hemoglobin and myoglobin, and the porphyrins. Other chapters consider the carotenoids related to photosynthesis. This book discusses as well the role of proteins in nearly all biological processes, including enzymatic catalysis, muscular contraction, immune protection, mechanical support, and genetic information. The final chapter deals with the structures and importance of radiosensitizers. This book is a valuable resource for chemists and biochemists.

This volume contains the lectures given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute "The Study of Fast Processes and Labile Species in Chemistry and Molecular Biology Using Ionising Radiation" held in Capri, Italy, September 7-l8th 1981. The aim of the Institute was to summarise the present position of the use of pulsed ionising radiation in chemical and biological chemical research. For background an outline of the basic radiation chemistry and physics involved and descriptions of techniques and equipment in current use was presented. It was followed by comprehensive coverage of the state of this research to date in various areas of chemistry and biological chemistry. It was hoped to demonstrate to researchers not directly involved with ionising radiation how this technique is now at a stage in its development where it can have wider applications in various branches of chemistry and biology. The fifty participants did indeed form a wide spectrum of scientific interest covering inorganic, physical and organic chemistry, molecular physics, molecular biology, radiobiology and bacteriology. They also represented a wide variety of countries viz. Belgium, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hungary, India, Italy, Poland, Turkey, U.S.A., U.K. and Yugoslavia.

A wonderfully successful NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Sulfur-Centered Reactive Intermediates in Chemistry and Biology" was held 18-30 June, 1989, at the Hotel Villa del Mare in Maratea, Italy. Despite the beautiful setting with mountains behind us and over looking the clear blue Mediterranean Sea under a cloudless sky (and with a private beach available), the lectures were extremely well attended. While some credit can go to the seriousness of the students, more must go to the calibre of speakers and the high quality of C. Chatgilialoglu, and Co-Director, Professor K. -D. their presentations. The Director, Dr. Asmus, are to be congratulated for putting together such an outstanding scientific program. Dr. Chatgilialoglu is also to be commended for arranging an equally stimulating social pro gram which included bus, train and boat trips to many local sites of interest. It was particularly fitting that a meeting on the chemistry and biochemistry of sulfur should be held in Italy since Italian chemists have made major contributions to our under standing of the organic chemistry of sulfur, including the chemistry of its reactive inter mediates. The early Italian interest in sulfur chemistry arose from the fact that Italy, or more specifically, Sicily, was a major world producer of sulfur prior to the development and exploitation of the Frasch process in Texas and Louisiana.

th The Who’s Who in Fluorescence 2009 is the 7 volume of the Who’s who series. The previous six volumes (2003 – 2008) have been very well received by the fluorescence community, with 1000’s of copies being distributed around the world, through conferences and workshops, as well as through internet book sites. In addition, the Institute of Fluorescence (http://theinstituteoffluorescence.com/) mailed 100’s of copies of the 2008 volume to contributors around the world. This new 2009 volume features some 419 entries from no fewer than 41 countries worldwide, as compared to 418 entries (38 different countries) in 2008 and 405 entries in the 2007 volume, respectively. We have received 29 new entries this year, and deleted 25 entries that were not updated by contributors from past years. In 2008, 129 AIM numbers were submitted as compared to 106 in 2007. This year the number has risen again to 136 AIM numbers submitted. This year we also see the introduction of the h-index number listing, a publication statistic provided by the Thompson’s ISI Web of Science. Some 42 contributors provided their h-numbers. In 2009 we also see a continued and strong company support, in light of the current world economic climate, which will enable us to further disseminate the volume in 2009– 2010. In this regard we especially thank the instrumentation companies for their continued support, where without their financial contributions, it is likely that the volume would not be the success it is today.

Kinetics of Inorganic Reactions provides a comprehensive account of the mechanisms of inorganic reaction. The book is comprised of 15 chapters that deal with the two main fields of inorganic reaction, the homogeneous gas-phase reactions and solution reactions. The first chapter of the text provides an introduction to some of the basic concepts in inorganic reaction, which include the mechanisms of a reaction, reactions in different phases, and the feasibilities of a reaction. Next, the book details the experimental techniques and treatment of data. The next series of chapters talks about gas-phase reactions. The book also dedicates a chapter in covering various types of reactions, including isotopic reaction and redox reaction. Chapters 12 to 14 deal with substitution reactions, while Chapter 15 talks about acid-base reactions. It is fifteen years since Walker and Straw wrote the first edition of 'Spectroscopy' and considerable developments have taken place during that time in all fields of this expanding subject. In atomic spectroscopy, for example, where the principles required in a student text have been laid down for many years, there have been advances in optical pumping and double resonance which cannot be neglected at undergraduate level. In addition, nuclear quadrupole resonance (n.q.f.) and far infrared spectroscopy now merit separate chapters while addtional chapters dealing with Mbssbauer spectroscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy and group theory are an essential requisite for any modern spectroscopy textbook. When the idea for a new edition of Spectroscopy was first discussed it quickly became clear that the task of revision would be an impossible one for two authors working alone. Consequently it was decided that the new edition be planned and co-ordinated by two editors who were to invite specialists, each of whom had experience of presenting their subject at an undergraduate level, to contribute a new chapter or to revise extensively an existing chapter. In this manner a proper perspective of each topic has been provided without any sacri fice of the essential character and unity of the first edition. The expansion of subject matter has necessitated the division of the complete work into three self contained volumes. Volume I includes atomic, n.m.f., n.q.f., e.s.r. and Mbssbauer spectroscopy.
