Efficient management of product information is vital for manufacturing enterprises in this information age. Considering the proliferation of product information, tight production schedules, and intense market competition, human intelligence alone cannot meet the requirements of efficient product development. Technologies and tools that support information management are urgently needed. This volume presents the design reuse methodology to support product development. Significant efforts have been made to create an intelligent and optimal design environment by incorporating the contemporary technologies in product family design, artificial intelligence, neural networks, information theories, etc. This volume covers both theoretical topics and implementation strategies, with detailed case studies to help readers gain an insight in areas such as product information modeling, information analysis, engineering optimization, production cost estimation, and product performance evaluation.

Logistics and transportation are a complex set of entities and systems interconnected by many physical, financial, and information flows, and, as with all systems, there are optimization and planning issues. In addition, they are subject to economic, social, and especially environmental pressures with the need to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. There is a need for original research to address these issues. Transport and Logistics Planning and Optimization addresses selected transportation and logistics problems at the strategic, tactical, and operational levels in a multidisciplinary approach, not only from a technological perspective but also from a social science perspective. Covering key topics such as supply chain, urban transportation, artificial intelligence, and computer science, this premier reference source is ideal for policymakers, industry professionals, researchers, academicians, scholars, instructors, and students.

This thesis constructs a model that helps Bridgestone better understand the optimal life cycle of a certain product. Through market research, it firstly defines the most important market trends that influence product development: growth and regulation. After delineating how a life cycle can be interpreted in different ways and exploring the gate model Bridgestone currently uses for their product portfolio, this research presents a merge of this gate model and a product life cycle, resulting in a commercial life cycle model. It goes on then by identifying different drivers of new product development, to conclude that financials, marketing and business environment are the most important for Bridgestone. After giving a short overview of Bridgestone as a company through financial data, strategy description, their competitive environment, and their product offering, this analysis creates a model, tested on two existing cases: the Turanza T001 and the Dueler H/P Sport. Through logistic regressions based on existing date, it builds a formula with those factors that influence volume the most: Volume = ß0 + -30387,829.Age + 23362,989.Age difference + 1122019,438.Label difference + -1403,789.Price Based on this formula, this thesis then calculates estimations of future volume curves and net present values, to evaluate each year if 1) keeping the old product is opportune or 2) launching the new product is better and when to do so exactly. In the end, it concludes that launching immediately is the best thing to do for both cases, as the net present values of the new products are positive and exceed that of the old one. It advices Bridgestone to use this model for future volume estimations and the used factors and their individual importance for the evaluation of their products performance in order to optimize their life cycle.
