Excerpt from Proceedings of the Grand Lodge of Texas, Vol. 1 of 2: From Its Organization in City of Houston, Dec. A. D. 1837, A. L. 5837, to the Close of the Grand Annual Communication Held at Palestine, January 19, A. D. 1857, A. L. 5857 I have with great care collected all the old records which have come under my notice, and compiled them in such a manner as I think will be most useful and interesting; and as it is well known'to all with whom I have been in the habit of meeting, that I am more practical than eloquent, more given to labor than to flowery language, I Shall close these prefatory remarks by adding a Short history of the creation, I may say, of Masonry in Texas, from the pen of a very distinguished Brother of our Order. Free Masonry in Texas - A Reminiscence of its early History. AS I took an active part in laying the first foundations of Free Masonry in this country, originated, and was personally present at, the first meeting ever held here, and cogn'izant of the earliest steps taken for the organization of a Lodge, I place upon'record the following facts, which may be of interest perhaps to the fraternity hereafter, and would otherwise be lost, as I am now the only one living of the five Brethren who originated Holland Lodge. H. G. Catlett’s name is on land surveys throughout central Texas. This book, with never-before published letters and documents, tells his story—his work as a surveyor, service as a Texas Ranger, a courier for Zachary Taylor, an Army quartermaster, an expert on Indian affairs, and a proponent for a National Road (through Texas, of course.)
