Excerpt from Practical or Ideal? There may come an occasional doubt, indeed, to the most practical man, as to the sufficiency of this view of life, and education, and politics. When a close student of biology shuts himself for months in the humble little laboratory that they show you in Paris, and comes out with a discovery that saves for France more than all her huge debt of war has cost her, men glorify the name of Pasteur and forget the long years of impractical education, and the infatuation of the student's ideal which led up to the great discovery. When the scientist sits pondering his problems and working out the abstrusest calculations in mathematics, he is a dreamer, but when his dream is realized in the harnessing of electricity, and men reckon by amperes, in terms of his own name, dreams are seen to be practical and vision is found to have substance, and the highest problems of abstruse science are seen to have as close relation to real life as the very bread we eat. Practical men may well ask, then, whether bread, necessary though it is, is any more than the sustenance of life, and whether life itself, for every man and in every pursuit. Excerpt from The Home Ideal In the matter presented in this little book, I have given complete descriptive color schemes of the room shown in the photographs. The greater number of these rooms are of my own designing. These photographs and the suggested schemes will, I hope, be of practical service to the woman who is planning her house. Having been engaged in practical house decorating and furnishing, I have, of necessity looked fully into the question of what Finishes, Stains and Enamels would best produce the effects I had planned. The various dull finish stains, as well as the eggshell and the high gloss ivory white enamel, with the many other unique finishes, all made by Chicago Varnish Company, have given to me and to my clients complete satisfaction. I wish this book also to be a grateful acknowledgment that I have been able through their goods, to obtain artistic effects, which otherwise would have been impossible. These photographs show the successful combinations which may be reached through the medium of these softly toned and attractive wood stains, and exquisite enamels tor the standing woodwork of the room. In the magazine and newspaper work which I am conducting on these lines, I reach many people in remote districts, and from them I am in constant receipt of Letters. These prove that the materials manufactured and put upon the market by Chicago Varnish Company (which have been used by my advice) are enabling the man of moderate means, as well as others, to secure for himself a home with a beautiful interior. Excerpt from The Millsaps Collegian, Vol. 7: The Ideal Versus the Practical in Politics The ideal, though always before us, is ever vanishing and unattainable. We are led away by the allurements of the selfish and sensual, by greed and gold. Frail human nature falters in pursuit of its highest good for the muddy vesture' of decay doth grossly close us in. Yet the ideal has the Divine sanction, for linked with the assurance that none doeth good, is the inspired command, Be ye perfect. Combining theoretical and practical approaches, this collection of essays explores classic detective fiction from a variety of contemporary viewpoints. Among the diverse perspectives are those which interrogate the way the genre reflects important social and cultural attitudes, contributes to a reader's ability to adapt to the challenges of daily life, and provides alternate takes on the role of the detective as an investigator and arbiter of truth. Part I looks at the nature of and the audience for detective fiction, as well as at the genre as a literary form. This section includes an inquiry into the role of the detective; an application of object-relations psychology to the genre; and analyses of recent literary criticism positing that traditional detective fiction contained the seeds of its own subversion. Part II applies a variety of theoretical positions to Agatha Christie and her heirs in the British ratiocinative tradition. A concluding essay positions the genre within the middle-class traditions of the novel since its inception in the eighteenth century. Of interest to all scholars and students of detective fiction and British popular culture.

Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work.
