In using the lessons in the classroom teachers will find many of them as given too long for one day's work. A week is not too much time to spend in reaching, for example, the law of associations here developed in the first lesson. For the formulation of this law pupils will be interested to trace in class and outside many trains of association and to talk about them familiarly as they do about the facts of nature or mathematics. And in most of the subjects, indeed, pupils may spend profitably a much longer time than one lesson in watching, giving, and discussing their experience before they are led to generalize. Excerpt from Practical Lessons in Psychology Within the past year the author has, at various institutes and other gatherings of teachers, delivered lectures on Psychology, chiefly on those phases that must, and do come in for a large share of consideration on the part of every successful teacher. The speculative form which Psychology sometimes assumes found no place in those discussions, but only such features as Are quite in touch with the ordinary experience of the average teacher in our common schools. The writer was surprised, and at the same time very much gratified, at the intense interest they evoked. At the solicitation of a large number of these same teachers, the lectures have accordingly been gathered together, and, with slight modifications and the advantage of much additional material, are now presented in book form. The style has not been changed from that employed in the lectures, viz., simple, direct discourse, because the author desires that the teachers whom he has already addressed will feel that he had them in mind in preparing this book, as he had when writing the original lectures, and also that the friendly acquaintance which was thereby established shall in no wise be dampened by the high-sounding phrases that are sometimes manufactured into book language. The terms "Mental Science" and "Psychology" are vague to the person who has not been schooled in the discussions of the purely speculative branches. It aims to present in an elementary way, and within a small compass, the more easily observed facts of our mental life together with the generally accepted principles of their explanation. Its field is chiefly the study of the normal, adult, human mind, and so may be described as an introduction to what is known as General Psychology. In these days, 'the winter of our discontent, ' the writer of a first book in psychology may follow one of three courses: he may appear as 'the champion of the structural psychology' or as the advocate of a psychology in terms of behavior or he may proceed after the manner of the eclectic, without special re gard to the systematic agreement of the topics and matter selected. It has been called witch-craft and in our own enlightened America, women have been burned at the stake for using but very little of the power explained in these instructions. In its various forms and uses it has been known as Cure by Holy Relics, Hypnotism, Mes merism, etc., etc. As a rule those using the power were as ignorant of its true origin, force and limitations as their enemies. In all its forms it has been doubted and feared. It has been the tool of fakirs, humbugs and Charlatans who abused what they understood of it as.
