Pour Le Sport

This edited volume gathers together studies examining various aspects of physical culture in literature written in French from Europe and around the Francophone world. We define physical culture as the systematic care for and development of the physique, and interpret it to include not only sport in the modern sense, but also all the athletic activities that preceded it or relate to it, such as bodily forms of exercise, leisure, and artistic creation. Our essays pursue diverse interpretive approaches and focus on texts from a wide variety of periods (medieval to the present) and genres (short stories, novels, essays, poetry) in order to consider the fundamental-yet highly neglected-place of physical activities in literature and culture from the French-speaking world. Some of the questions the essays explore include: Does the genre sports literature exist in French, and if so, what are its characteristics? How do governments or other political entities mobilize sports literature? What role do narratives about sports-especially the creation of teams-play in the construction of national, regional and/or local identities? How is physical culture used in literary works for pedagogical or ideological purposes? To what extent do sports performances provide a metaphorical and figurative discourse for discussing literature and culture?

Une situation paradoxale au regard des nombreuses études démontrant que le sport est l'un des leviers les plus efficaces pour favoriser l'inclusion des personnes en situation de handicap. L'un des défis porte sur la formation du personnel encadrant. Une adaptation des savoirs techniques et pédagogiques aux pratiques et aux publics handicapés semble nécessaire. C'est ce constat qui a conduit le think tank Sport et Citoyenneté à réunir un groupe de travail européen sur cette question. Cet ouvrage est le résultat de ces trois années d'échanges. Il fournit plusieurs pistes de réflexion sur le développement, avec une priorité forte: le développement d'une base légale pour l'intégration de cours spécifiques sur la façon d'appréhender le handicap dans les cursus de formation aux métiers du sport. 56% of European citizens with a disability say that they never do any regular physical activity. This is a paradox in view of the many studies showing that sport is one of the most effective ways of encouraging inclusion. One of the challenges concerns the training of sports and physical activity instructors and coaches.Technical and teaching knowledge need to be adapted to take account of disabled sport practice and persons with a disability. This observation led the Sport and Citizenship think tank to bring together a European work group on this subject. This work is the result of three years of discussions. It provides various points for consideration on the development of an appropriate training course which will help support and integrate persons with a disability in the best possible way.

Filling a gap in the literature on the history of sport in Europe, the book brings together complementary studies on diverse aspects of the interrelation between sport and urban space. Going from geography to political science, from sports history to urban and transport history, it suggests a three-fold approach. A first thematic group of researches ranges around "Sport Development and Urban Spaces", exploring the impact of the city on the rise of sport. A second focal point is related to "Sport Policies and Local Identities" with a special attention given to the making of sport venues and competitions in the making of urban identity. A third thematic group includes studies on "Sport Facilities, Engineers and Workers". The articulation of the three parts builds a unique contribution to the process of identity making at a European level. The paper analyzes sport, culture and society including discussions of socialization of girls and women in sport; sport, gender and the media; and careers in sport.
