Excerpt from Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 289: March 1976 Look for substantially larger broiler and turkey meat output and for little change in egg production this winter and spring from a year ago. While prices during the first half of 1976 will be down from october-december 1975, egg prices likely will average above a year earlier while broiler and turkey prices may be near J annary-j une 1975 lev els. Egg production in 1975 continued the downward trend of recent years, slipping a little over 2 per cent from 1974 and 8 percent below the record large 1971 production. Layer numbers in 1975 were down a little over 3 percent but the rate of lay was up from the previous year. January 1 layer numbers were 2 percent below January 1, 1975. Replacement pullets entering the laying flock may increase about 4 percent during january-march but then fall 6 percent in April June. However, the size of the laying flock in coming months will be influenced significantly by producers' decisions regarding the force molting of their old layers. Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 31: July 1, 1939 The poultry and egg situation in June showed little improvement over previous months of this year, reports the Bureau of Agricultural Economics. Prices of' eggs were at the lowest level since 1931] and prices of chickens were lower than at any time since the winter of 1937. The lower prices this year than last reflect chiefly larger seasonal marketings of chickens and eggs and larger storage stocks of these products. A recent supporting factor to eggrprices has been the purchase of cars of eggs by the Federal Surplus Commodities Corporation for relief distribution. The feed egg price ratio continues much less favorable for farmers than a year earlier. Receipts of eggs at the four markets New York, Chicagp, Philadelphia and Boston have been declining seasonally but continue above last year. Since late May, combined storage holdings of shell and frozen eggs have been above last year. By August 1 holdings may be 5 to 10 percent larger than on that date last year. The number of chickens from this year's hatchings in farm flocks on June 1 was about 3 percent larger than on that date in 1938 as compared with 5 percent above last year on May 1. On the basis of past relationships be tween changes in numbers of chickens on January 1 and changes in number of chicks and young chickens the preceding June 1, the size of laying flocks on January 1, 19110 may be little if any larger than'in i939. Excerpt from Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 30: June 1, 1939 The feed - egg ratio (based on Chicago prices) has risen steadily during the past 2 months. This is in marked contrast to the sharp decline in the ra tio which occurred last year after April 16. During the 5 weeks ending April 15 of this year the ratio averaged 4 percent below the corresponding weeks of 1958, but during the first 5 weeks of May the ratio was 22 percent above last year and 5 percent above the 1928 - 57 average. In terms of eggs, it required about lé dozen more to purchase 100 pounds of poultry ration at Chicago during the week ending May 20 than in the corresponding week last year. Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 169: Jan. 26, 1954 Several factors figure in this season's very moderate seasonal de cline. The low stocks of frozen egg are one of these factors. January 1 stocks of frozen egg were only M2 million pounds, even smaller than the small holdings of 50 million pounds on January 1, 1953, and considerably below the 67 million pounds of January 1, 1952. Because of the low current level of stocks, egg breaking in large volume probably will begin early in the season. If that occurs, a part of the seasonal surplus of eggs will be diverted before it becomes a serious price-depressing influence. Also affecting the situation is the long-time trend toward evening out seasonal variation in egg production, and with it a corresponding evening out of seasonal price changes. This has resulted largely from the increased rates of lay per hen in the fall. Rates of lay in the spring have increased relatively little. Partly as a result of the seasonal evening-out process, egg produc tion in the next few months is likely to exceed 1953 by only small margins. The possible increase will be due chiefly to the 3 percent increase from last year in January 1 numbers of potential layers on farms. Rates of lay are not likely to be significantly above a year ago. Production in October December 1953 was 6 percent higher than a year earlier, with the increased rate of lay the principal reason for the increase.
