Published in 1798, Lyrical Ballads is a dazzling collaboration containing twenty-three poems by close friends, William Wordsworth (1770-1850) and Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) - two major figures of English Romanticism. The volume heralded a new approach to poetry and expresses the poets' reflections on mankind's relationship with the forces of the world. Coleridge's contribution includes the nightmarish vision of 'The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere', one of the works for which he became best known, as well as the fantastical conversational poem 'The Foster-Mother's Tale' and the melancholic 'The Nightingale'. Wordsworth's 'We are Seven' depicts a child's naïve optimism in the face of the cruel mortality, while 'Goody Blake and Harry Gill' and 'Simon Lee' celebrate the simplicity and strength he perceived in country people, and 'Tintern Abbey' explores the healing powers of nature. Published as part of the Penguin Poetry First Editions series in which the greatest collections of poetry in English will be published in their original form. All texts have been completely reset and some minor changes made to punctuation.

This selection of poetry concentrates on Wordsworth's greatest poems including Lyrical Ballads, several tales from The Excursion and over half of The Prelude.

Every phase has a life of its own, with a tale to tell." -Jennifer Word To sum up some of her lives, Jennifer Word wrote a poem (and in this book, attached an original photograph taken of something she found to be meaningful or beautiful in some form or fashion to accompany each tale). She has included one poem for each life experience that affected or changed her in some way, no matter how large or small. And in her words, "Nothing is trivial." Published in the fortieth year of her life, Lyrical Tales includes forty selected poems that represent the most important 'lives' within her forty years of existence. The poems span a period of writing from age ten to thirty-seven, at which time she ceased to write further poetry.

The present edition provides the first comprehensive textual history from earliest manuscript to final lifetime printing of the poems published in the epochal Lyrical Ballads, and of contemporaneous short poems by Wordsworth (1770-1850). I wrote these tales many years ago. It was the first collection of anything I put down on paper. Back then my life took a turn, and suddenly the need to record things became simply overwhelming. The interesting thing about this body of work is each story came to me almost in it's entirety. Honestly, it felt more as if I were taking dictation rather than being a thoughtful writer. They have a poetic or more accurately, a lyrical quality to them, they simply insisted upon this genre for some reason. I remember hearing as a young girl that a story chooses you not the other way around. Well I can attest to that for even though the writing has to do with my life's lessons there was no preparation for such a project. There are 38 stories with 38 adjoining pieces of art, I hope you enjoy my paintings.
