This book offers case study of the tridimensional exploration in whole exploration cycle with comprehensive and systematic geological and geophysical studies in the Bongor Basin. Focused on the typical intensively inversed rift basin—the Bongor Basin in Chad, this book establishes petroleum geology model, accumulation model of the typical intensively inversed rift basin and ensemble exploration techniques by studying comprehensively through the lens of structural geology, petrology, geochronology, sedimentology, paleontology, petroleum geochemistry, petroleum geology, and hydrocarbon accumulation dynamics studies on both granite buried hill and sandstone reservoir. Based on the cases in whole exploration cycle and abundant primary research resource (some are first published in public) in the Bongor Basin, this book is a valuable reference for researchers, managers, instructors, and students who engaged in petroleum exploration.

This volume summarizes in 16 chapters the petroleum geology of the Békés basin with respect to its geological setting in the Pannonian Basin. The work was accomplished by a joint effort of the Hungarian Oil and Gas Co. and U.S. Geological Survey. In contrast with other books that discuss the geology of Hungary, this volume identifies, in detail, potential source rocks and reservoir rocks, and evaluates the maturation, generation, migration, and entrapment of hydrocarbons. The outstanding points are: (1) its summary of the petroleum geology of the Békés basin with respect to its structural and sedimentological setting in the Pannonian Basin; (2) the identification of geographic areas, structural trends and stratigraphic zones that remain relatively unexplored; and (3) a summary of `petroleum plays' with an assessment of their recoverable, undiscovered resources of oil and gas. This book is primarily for petroleum geologists interested in oil and gas exploration in Hungary, and earth scientists interested in the geology of the Pannonian Basin.

This text covers a wide range of exploration topics from the regional to the field scale. It provides new information on Neogene to recent stratigraphy and sedimentation in the North Atlantic. A significant amount of exploration has taken place since the publication of Geological Society special publication no. 93 in 1995.

The publication of this book Petroleum Formation and Occurrence by Bernard Tissot and Dietrich Welte will indeed be welcomed by pertroleum geologists, petroleum geochemists, teachers and students in these fields, and all others who are interested in the origin and accumulation of hydrocarbons in nature. It is indeed a privilege for us to have the opportunity of sharing with these two eminent scientists the wealth of information they have acquired and developed during long careers devoted to concentrated scholarly study and practical investigation of the nature, origin, and occurrence of petroleum. Professor Bernard Tissot graduated from the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Mines in 1954 and from the Ecole Nationale Superieure du Petrole in 1955. In 1955 he received a D. E. S. in geology from the University of Grenoble and then began research work on petroleum geology at the Institut Fran~ais du Petrole. He was made head of the Department of Geochemistry in 1965, and since 1970 has also been teaching organic geochemistry at the Ecole Nationale Superieure du Petrole where he became Profes sor in 1973. Professor Tissot has had a broad and varied background of practical experience. He has been a member of exploration teams in France, New Caledonia, and Sahara. In 196G-1963 he headed a mission of the IFP to the Department of National Development of Australia.
