Perspectives From The European Language Portfolio

Using constructivist principles and autonomous learning techniques the ELP has pioneered innovative and cutting edge approaches to learning languages that can be applied to learning across the spectrum. Although articles on the success of the ELP project have appeared in some academic journals, Perspectives from the European Language Portfolio is the first book to report on and contextualise the project’s innovative techniques for a wider educational research audience. During the last ten years the ELP has increasingly become a reference tool for language learning and teaching in primary, secondary and tertiary educational settings all around Europe. The editors of this volume believe that there is a need to reflect on the significant contribution that the ELP has delivered for language learning and teaching, and to critically evaluate its achievements. This volume offers a range of investigations from theoretical studies to practical cases around these issues, and includes: relevant contributions of the ELP to language pedagogy; assessing the impact of the ELP on pedagogical research and practice; exploring and defining pathways for future developments; Reflective learning. This book is intended for a readership of language teachers and researchers across Europe. The European Language Portfolio aims to foster the development of learner autonomy, intercultural awareness and plurilingualism. Teachers of particular languages working on their own can use the ELP to promote learner autonomy, but the goals of intercultural awareness and plurilingualism invite us to use the ELP in all foreign language classes at all levels in the school. The guide introduces the language education policy that underpins the ELP, explores the key concepts that it embodies, and explains how to plan, implement and evaluate whole-school ELP projects. The ten case studies published on the project website illustrate various dimensions of ELP use and include practical suggestions and activities for teachers and learners.

This book is a practical guide to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (CEFR) (Council of Europe 2001) and the CEFR Companion Volume (CEFR/ CV; COE 2018), which have increasingly been used to inform the language policies and teaching practices of countries within and outside of Europe. It helps practitioners to (i) grasp essential and core concepts of the Common European Framework of Reference, (ii) identify parts of the CEFR and the CEFR/CV as well as other CEFR-related resources and documents that are relevant for readers’ different purposes, and (iii) utilise and adapt these resources for their own needs. Written by practitioners for practitioners, this hands-on guide covers the philosophy of the CEFR, curricula, assessment, learner autonomy, the task-based approach, and teacher development. Logically explaining all aspects of the framework and its application, this manual helps readers deal with many of the difficulties encountered when using CEFR and the CEFR CV. Papers presented at the first Oxford-Kobe English Education Seminar, sponsored by the Kobe Institute, Kobe, Japan, and held at the Institute from 14-17 March, 2007.

A group of Italian language tutors attended sessions dedicated to Italian language teaching and learning that were included in the SIS Biennial Conference in 2015. Following the conference, the group suggested that a publication of the proceedings to mark the first of these meetings would be a useful resource for all language tutors. To five of the original papers presented in Oxford, another three were added in order to include a range of ideas and experiences in one publication.

At a moment when the ePortfolio has been recognized as a high impact practice – as a unique site for hosting student integrative learning and as a powerful genre for assessment – this book provides faculty, staff, and administrators with a set of frameworks and models useful for guiding students in designing and creating ePortfolios that clearly communicate their purpose and effectively use the affordances of the medium.In short, this book both illustrates and provides guidance on how to support the development of students’ ePortfolio literacy. The ePortfolio curricular models provided in ePortfolio as Curriculum include both those integrated within existing disciplinary courses and those offered through credit-bearing stand-alone courses.In taking up questions focused on what students need to know and do in becoming informed, effective ePortfolio makers, the contributors to this volume – from the standpoint of their course outcomes and institutional contexts – present various approaches to developing an ePortfolio curriculum. Individually and collectively, the chapters explain ways to engage students in understanding the potential purposes, structures, audiences, and designs of ePortfolios; in developing the reflective practices for contextualizing and informing the selection and curation of artifacts; and in creating appropriate focus and coherence.Synthesizing insights from the previous chapters, the concluding chapter identifies six consistent features of an ePortfolio curriculum that support the development of students' ePortfolio literacy. In addition, Kathleen Blake Yancey identifies and defines seven common ePortfolio curricular dimensions that contribute to students' ePortfolio literacy, among them student agency, digital identity, and campus and global citizenship. Not least, she describes new practices emerging from ePortfolio curricula, including new ePortfolio-specific genres; new metaphors used to characterize ePortfolios and their practices; and new issues that the ePortfolio curriculum raises.

The Routledge Handbook of Language Awareness is a comprehensive and informative overview of the broad field of language awareness. It contains a collection of state-of-the-art reviews of both established themes and new directions, authored and edited by experts in the field.
