Talent management is a way banks acquire competitive advantage. Practices such as personality profiling with effective knowledge-based productivity and the application of high-performance work systems help to set a company apart from its competition and maintain this competitive advantage. This book provides an in-depth look at the relationship between personality types and individual-level performance in knowledge-based environments, through cases in Australia’s banking and finance sector. This book also examines how high-performance workplace systems influence individual performance in relation to productivity through a multi-level analysis of micro- and meso-level factors. The findings in this book have relevant implications not only for the Australian system but also for other banking and financial service contexts outside of Australia.

This paper reviews Australian banks’ performance from an international perspective, with a focus on changes in capital and liquidity risk. The paper analyses the extent of any vulnerability that might arise from a potential deterioration in the funding markets and discusses whether liquidity rules, such as those being considered by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, may help reduce banks’ liquidity risks and improve financial stability.

As an outcome of financial deregulation, commercial banks have significantly diversified from a domestic dependence on simple interest-bearing loans to a broader range of financial services across international markets. Such initiatives have transformed the structure of the Australian banking industry and are destined to receive scrutiny following the announcement of Australia's financial services inquiry. Against the view that attempts by firms to diversify can be expected to impact negatively on financial performance, we find no evidence to suggest that diversification has been detrimental to the performance of Australian banks. It appears, rather, that Australia's banks have improved their risk-return revenue streams as an outcome of diversification. We confirm our findings with both accounting and market measures of performance.

The present study has employed a multiple-stage approach based on Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to measure the level of efficiency and productivity of the Australian banks before, during and after the Global Financial Crisis 2007-2009. The purpose of this analysis is to: (i) measure and compare the efficiency level of banks applying three different approaches; (ii) measure productivity changes of the sample banks by the means of the Malmquist indices; (iii) assess the relationship between the level of efficiency and the institutional size of each bank by the means of a univariate cross-tabulation approach; (iv) examine the impact of the global financial crisis 2007-2009 on the performance of Australian banks; and (v) analyse the competence of recent mergers and acquisitions in Australian banking sector in the performance of banks.

This Detailed Assessment of Observance report specifies Base Core Principles (BCP) for effective banking supervision in Australia. An assessment of the effectiveness of banking supervision requires a review of the legal framework, and a detailed examination of the policies and practices of the institution(s) responsible for banking regulation and supervision. In line with the BCP methodology, the assessment focused on banking supervision and regulation in Australia and did not cover the specificities of regulation and supervision of other financial institutions. The assessment has made use of five categories to determine compliance: compliant; largely compliant, materially noncompliant, noncompliant, and non-applicable. The report insists that Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) should put more focus on assessing the various components of firms’ Internal Capital Adequacy Assessment Process and other firm-wide stress testing practices. A periodic more comprehensive assessment of banks’ risk management and governance frameworks will further enhance APRA’s supervisory approach.

Recent corporate scandals such as Enron, WorldCom and James Hardie have both made stakeholders dissatisfied with corporate financial accountability and increased calls for greater corporate transparency. In response, companies are increasing the amount on voluntary disclosures to inform stakeholders about organisational performance. While criticisms abound as to the 'public relations' nature of these exercises, there has been little formal evaluation of stakeholder reporting, especially in Australia. In addition, the important aspect of stakeholder reciprocity, where not only stakeholder satisfaction but also their contribution to the organisation is evaluated and reported, has not been examined. Arguably, the disclosure of both of these increases the transparency of the organisation from a stakeholder's perspective. To examine both of these issues, a detailed study was conducted using the non-financial performance indicators of Australia' Top five banks, as available in both annual reports and websites, to examine the nature of stakeholder reporting and the extent to which stakeholder reciprocity is disclosed. The results clearly showed that there is neither consistency in the reporting of key performance indicators nor is there consistency in reporting across both stakeholder satisfaction and stakeholder contribution. Stakeholder satisfaction dominates and little effort has been directed to evaluate and report on the stakeholder contribution. The study has also clearly indicated that, other than shareholders, the top five Australian banks have identified customers and employees as their primary key stakeholders. Communities and regulators are secondary stakeholders, whereas there was little or no emphasis on suppliers, alliances, partnerships and intermediaries. The findings of this study have important implications for both future research and policy. In relation to the latter, guidelines need to be established to improve stakeholder reporting and value creation processes aligned with these reciprocity dimensions.

This book looks at how Chinese companies optimize investment opportunities while implementing the Belt and Road Initiative (B&R or BRI). Specifically, it studies five high-profile infrastructure projects undertaken by Chinese firms. Going in-depth through case-study analysis, this book fills a gap by providing the background stories of these projects. By applying a case study approach to five notable and representative B&R projects, including Hambantota Port, the Port de Djibouti, and China–Belarus Industrial Park, it is found that strategies of Chinese firms to implement the BRI have been designed to achieve property rights security, reduction of transaction costs, and internalization of benefits overflowing from expanded business scope or multiple business lines. How can the public manager create and co-create value in the digital economy? While there is much exciting work being done, there is a pressing need to recontextualize public value theory (PVT), specifically in terms of its theoretical precepts, in the fluid and dynamic environment that the digital economy has produced. Much of the theoretical undergirding of PVT predates the full onset of today’s digital economy, leaving aside phenomena including citizen-driven innovations, decentralized digital structures, and the algorithmic foundations of new economic life. This is why a conceptually driven exercise in contemporizing PVT would be of great value to public administration’s theoreticians seeking to lead the theory in catching up to the praxis. This book seeks to answer the question of creating and co-creating public managerial value by developing chapters that revisit categories central to the functions of public managers in relation to other value-creating agents under PVT. It introduces new and important lenses to PVT that are grounded in the praxis of the digital economy, raising new questions about old problems in PVT and generating newer formulations that push PVT forward and make its debates salient to the futures that lay before the modern public manager. The book therefore constitutes an important effort to take PVT forward by shedding new light on the potency of the public manager in confronting and constructing the digital economy through co-creation with the other agents of public value.
