Excerpt from Panama Canal, What It Is What It Means It has been compiled under the supervision of the Director General of the Pan American Union, who was United States Minister to Panama at the beginning of the work on the canal in 1904-1905, assisting in the diplomatic negotiations establishing the first relations of the government of Panama and that of the Canal Zone. Since then, at other posts and in his present posi tion, he has not only endeavored to follow closely the construe tion of the canal but to study constantly its possible effect upon the progress and prosperity of the American republics. As hehas also been Minister to two other Latin American countries, Argentina and Colombia, as well as delegate to the Second Pan American Conference in Mexico, and, prior to that service, Min ister to Siam in southern Asia, and Commissioner General of the St. Louis World's Fair to Asia and Australia, he has actual acquaintance with the countries and commerce affected by the Panama Canal. It is impossible within the space limitations of a book of this kind to do full justice to the Panama Canal, what it is and what it means, but as much information as possible of a practical and interesting character has been included. Excerpt from Panama and What It Means Yes, observed the American enthusiast, it is a great ditch. You see those flat cars piled with dirt? Well, by the time the Atlantic joins the Pacific we Shall have removed as much dirt as would fill a train of such cars miles long, which is getting pretty near four times round the earth. Yes, it is a great ditch. This is the spirit of the men who, between Colon and Panama, are digging and blasting, dam ming rivers, fighting landslips, building locks, so the great Canal will be finished long before the official opening day, which is in 1915. Excerpt from The Panama Canal: Its Past, Present, and Future The Isthmus of Panama has been well described as a barrier between two oceans which has, nevertheless, failed to serve as a bridge between two continents. So rugged and overgrown with tropical jungle, and so subject to malarious and other disorders is this isthmus, that, despite its fame and its beauties in certain respects, this natural pathway between North and South America has been neglected as a means of transit, in a longitudinal direction, from the one to the other; and it still remains - away from the immediate influence of the canal works almost as wild as when traversed by Balboa. The same may be said concerning great portions of South America, which remain unaltered since first aroused by the tramp of the European horseman. No railway or road traverses the isthmus connecting the two continents The Panama Railroad crossed it transversely; an isolated link of communication in the interrupted navigation between the Pacific and the Atlantic. Excerpt from The Panama Canal: Its History, Its Political Aspects, and Financial Difficulties A fervid imagination may depict M. De Lesseps, in the robes of the High Priest of Civilization, officiating at the marriage of oceans or at the divorcement of conti nents. But sober judgment will find in him the plain promoter, who never made a serious study of the scheme; who, encouraged by his own excessive vanity on one side and the fulsome flattery of his countrymen on the other, has allowed himself to be used as a tool in the hands of ambitious people, who, in plain words, bought his name in order that they might enrich themselves out of the savings of the artless and enthusiastic mass of his own countrymen.
