Pakistan is one of the most important states in the international system and a key concern of western security. This collection identifies a set of national and regional/international trends which will be critical in determining the medium to long-term stability and cohesion of Pakistan, yet which have received relatively little attention elsewhere. Experts on different aspects of Pakistan explore issues of political Islam, minorities, wider political trends, and the economic impacts of the recent floods to seek to explain some of the key drivers of change within Pakistan, and to reflect on the dynamics of US-Pakistan relationships and Pakistan’s rethinking of its regional relationships to understand key regional and international dynamics shaping Pakistan’s future. This book will be of interest to scholars in south asian political studies, ethnic studies and international relations. This book was published as a special issue of Contemporary South Asia.

Pakistan is at currently at the centre of regional and global geo-strategic issues as a frontline state in the global war on terrorism. It is seeking to project itself as a modern Islamic state that can engage both the Islamic bloc and the western world in the post 9/11 era. This book addresses some questions under the broad rubric of International Relations and Security. It focuses on four themes: Pakistan and global security; Pakistan’s international relations; politics and identity in Pakistan; and economic development of Pakistan. Leading international experts have contributed articles within the framework of these themes.

The terrorist attacks of September 11and the US reaction to it in the form of a war on terrorism have completely transformed the strategic environment in the Southern Asian region. Pakistan, due to its geo-political location and past policies, had to bear a significant impact of the war on terrorism. There is no aspect of Pakistan s state, society, foreign policy and security that has not been affected by the war on terrorism. This volume is an effort to understand the evolving strategic environment and how Pakistan is placed within that context. The book provides a comprehensive perspective as well as some interesting points of views on Pakistan.

This book is to date the first and only study on Pakistan's foreign policy decision making process. It discusses the hows and whys of its foreign policy as it developed in a particular fashion based on a certain self view generating a world view. Post 9/11 Change requires a fundamental change in self image and world view based on that new self image that goes beyond the act of becoming US ally in Afghanistan or abandoning the policy of supporting Taliban. The main topic of the study is identification of that change, its requirements and some basic suggestions as to how to go about it. The book traces the historical International and Domestic context of Pakistan's Post 9/11 Afghan Policy. It analyses the regional impact of the decision, the domestic debate that it generated and concludes with identifications of implications for changes in Pakistan, required for sustenance of its changed policy.

The Council on Foreign Relations sponsors Independent Task Forces to assess issues of current and critical importance to U.S. foreign policy and provide policymakers with concrete judgments and recommendations. Diverse in backgrounds and perspectives, Task Force members aim to reach a meaningful consensus on policy through private and non-partisan deliberations.
