There were no women left. He was sure of it. After the war, Cole Tanner was pretty damn certain they were all dead. Hell, he and his unit hadn't seen one in years. But then there she was. A woman. All alone, standing in the middle of the road. His road. She looked so haunting. So hungry and dirty, and well... vulnerable. He was going to help her, really he was. And for a split second, he wondered just how she'd survived. Then she leveled the gun at him... and he had his answer. Damsel in distress? Apparently not. But that didn't change things, not how Cole saw it. No, she still needed him and his team... same as they needed her. And Cole was nothing if not good at convincing people to follow him. Or at least, he used to be. So he'd try his hand one more time, and hope like hell she didn't pull that trigger. Get your copy of Outlasting After now, because Cole's time has always been running out.

Recent studies have highlighted that stimulation of the nervous system with spatiotemporal patterns may engage the nervous system in fundamentally different ways than can be achieved with conventional single-frequency stimulation. Coordinated Reset deep brain stimulation (DBS) may affect synaptic plasticity and result in long-lasting (after stimulation is turned off) effects. Spatio-temporal paired pulse stimulation can be used to induce spike timing dependent strengthening or weakening of synaptic connections between brain regions for therapeutic purposes. Burst stimulation may enable cell-type specific targeting, as recently shown in rodent models of DBS for Parkinson’s Disease and in thalamic DBS in humans. Burst stimulation has also shown promise in spinal cord for chronic pain and vagus nerve stimulation for cardiac applications. And multiple hierarchies of temporal patterning may have their own unique effect on the nervous system as evidenced by data on intermittent theta-burst transcranial magnetic stimulation for the control of depression.

The Stimulated Brain—which garnered an Honorable Mention for Biomedicine & Neuroscience at the 2015 PROSE Awards from the Association of American Publishers—presents the first integration of findings on brain stimulation from different research fields with a primary focus on Transcranial Electrical Stimulation (tES), one of the most frequently used noninvasive stimulation methods. The last decade has witnessed a significant increase in the amount of research exploring how noninvasive brain stimulation can not only modulate but also enhance cognition and brain functions. However, although Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and particularly tES have the potential to become more widely applicable techniques (as they come with none of the risks associated with deep brain stimulation) the reference literature on these neurotechnologies has been sparse. This resource provides a broad survey of current knowledge, and also marks future directions in cognitive and neuro-enhancement. It expands our understanding of basic research findings from animals and humans, including clear translational benefits for applied research and the therapeutic use of noninvasive brain stimulation methods. The book's coverage includes a primer that paves the way to a more advanced knowledge of tES and its physiological basis; current research findings on cognitive and neuro-enhancement in animals and typical and atypical human populations, such as neurological patients; and discussions of future directions, including specific neuroethical issues and pathways for collaboration and entrepreneurialism. The Stimulated Brain is the first book to provide a comprehensive understanding of different aspects of noninvasive brain stimulation that are critical for scientists, clinicians, and those who are interested in “stimulating their minds by exploring this fascinating field of research. Honorable Mention for Biomedicine & Neuroscience in the 2015 PROSE Awards from the Association of American Publishers The only reference on the market to focus on transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) Coverage across technical, historical, and application topics makes this the single, comprehensive resource for researchers and students Edited book with chapters authored by international leaders in the fields of medicine, neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy—providing the broadest, most expert coverage available

The novelty of this book's approach lies in addressing the impact of neurobiological factors as well as psychological influences on brain recovery. There is growing evidence that emotional, motivational, and cognitive factors along with personality traits play a crucial role in brain plasticity, resilience, and recovery. Topics include synaptic and neuronal plasticity, development of brain reserves, biological markers, environmental factors, psychological profile, emotional resilience, and personality traits. By combining the latest research on neural mechanisms and on psychological resilience the authors hope that this book can lead to the development of better treatment strategies for functional recovery from brain damage.
