Excerpt from Origen and Greek Patristic Theology This volume cannot claim to be written in the popular style adopted in some other volumes of the series, for the simple reason that the subject scarcely admits of being popularised. At the same time I have tried to make the book readable, and to refrain as far as possible from undue technicalities of philosophical and theological language. It has been my aim to avoid on the one hand the Scylla of catering for a public which no art or device will ever induce to concern itself about Greek Patristic Theology, and, on the other, the Charybdis of scholastic pedantry. Rightly or wrongly, I am convinced that my task will be most usefully accomplished by furnishing a brief introduction to the study of a subject on which, in English at least, there are not too many easily accessible helps. In view of the impossibility of assuming any very intimate knowledge of Origen's writings on the part of the general reader, or even of the average theological student, I have further deemed it best, while not refraining from criticism where it seemed called for, to aim at being expository rather than critical. He was probably a more voluminous author than even moderns like Calvin or Richard Baxter. It is, of course, impossible to accept the traditional figure of six thousand as any indication of the real number of his works; but Jerome's question, " Which of us can read all that he has written ?" is a sufficient testimony to the magnitude of his literary labours. As a result, perhaps, of the growing suspicion attaching to his name in the Church, the greater part of his writings has perished; and much of what we do possess is in the form of a by no means accurate translation by Rufinus. The writings of Origen are not limited to any one department of theological investigation; they range over the entire field. Much, however, has been erroneously ascribed to him, as, e.g., the Philosophumena or Refutation of all Heresies, which in tone and language appears to be a Latin product rather than a Greek, and the Dialogues of one Adamantius JDe recta in Deum fide. That he should have been the reputed author of the latter work within a century after his death is scarcely surprising in view of the fact that even during his lifetime he had to complain of undue liberties being taken alike with his works and with his name. i. For long this translation enjoyed great popularity among the Hellenists, and seems to have been read even in some Palestinian synagogues. Josephus makes extensive use of it. Origen's On First Principles is a foundational work in the development of Christian thought and doctrine: it is the first attempt in history at a systematic Christian theology. For over a decade it has been out of print with only expensive used copies available; now it is available at an affordable price and in a more accessible format. On First Principles is the most important surviving text written by third-century Church father, Origen. Origen wrote in a time when fundamental doctrines had not yet been fully articulated by the Church, and contributed to the very formation of Christianity. This book assembles the evidence for what the Greek Fathers, the men whose contructive thought underlies the creeds, really thought and taught about the nature of God. It shows that they were original thinkers, with a profound reverence for the text of the Scriptures, and minds keenly tranined to discuss what ultimate truths were expressed in the scriptural text and what reality should be ascribed to Christian religious experience. The results indicate that a good deal which is assumed in current theological text-books needs to be revised. The Fathers had to reconcile monotheism with faith in a Trinity of divine Persons. In the process, they pursued many lines of inquiry, often only to discard them after trial, but after following various clues and making various intellectual adventures they reached a solution of the problem, which was both true to their data and philosophically reasonable. Though the bulk of the book is concerned with the third and fourth centuries, during which the creeds were in the process of formulation, the story is carried down to the eighth century where the progress of original thought came to a standstill. It is shown that a great change came over the philosophical tradition during the sixth century, and owing to the consequent growth of formalism, a genuine outbreak of tritheism occurred. The book ends with the account of how this outbreak was met and overcome, largely through the efforts of a thinker whose very name is unknown, and whose book has only survived under the name of another man.
