Drawing on the work of international contributors Media Organization and Production examines a wide range of global-local media organizations and the production of different mediums and genres. Following the editor′s introduction which sets out the principal differences of approach and defining debates, chapters address: transnational and national, commercial and public service corporations; international film and TV co-productions; children′s television news production, the historical development of ′liveness′ on radio, and music journalism; the politics and organizational forms of alternative media production including radical newspapers, video and the internet; and the changing ′production ecology′ of natural history television. These topics are examined through a variety of theoretical and conceptual frameworks that help to illuminate how cultural production often involves a complex articulation of differing influences and constraints, both material and discursive, intended and unintended, structurally determined and culturally mediated.Together the chapters in this book help to recover this complexity and thereby help us to better understand the nature and output of today′s media.

Economics has been basically a study of the interactions between organizations, with some organizations being so small we only have one person in them. The internal organization of the largest hierarchies has indeed been looked at, but a good reason for working less on these organizations is that the internal reactions are much harder to understand. It is sensible to solve the problems we can solve and put the others off until later. The author's basic purpose here is to look at these larger hierarchical organizations, and develop a scientific account of them. In Economic Hierarchies, Organization and the Structure of Production Gordon Tullock examines the internal functioning and organization of the corporation. In the author's personal tradition, the book relies on narrative analysis rather than mathematical complexity to convey insights into the functioning of the corporation.

The absence of a book dealing with rubber processing has been apparent for some time and it is surprising that a straightforward text has not been produced. However, this book goes far beyond the scope of a simple technical approach and deals with the full spectrum of activities which lead to successful and profitable product manufacture. The need to deliver a product to a customer at the right time, at the right cost, and at the right quality is a basic premise on which the book is based. The increasingly stringent demands of customers for products that can be introduced directly into an assembly or production line without goods inwards inspection, are placing increasing pressures on the manufacturer. As a result, it is becoming essential to achieve and sustain product quality and consistency, by the monitoring and control of manufacture, at a level which renders all products saleable. The book has been written to satisfy the needs of practitioners in the rubber industry and is certainly not another descriptive text which is only read for interest when more important matters are not pressing. My close cooperation with Philip K. Freakley during the writing of the book has resulted in the incorporation of many of the viewpoints and methods which I have developed and refined during more than 38 years in the rubber industry.
