Excerpt from The Physical Basis of Life It is not surprising that such pronouncements should have had a hostile reception fifty years ago. Even in this twentieth century some of our non - scientific friends somehow manage to find a source of heat and fury in so evident a fact as organic evolution. On the whole, how ever, sane and well-informed persons do not now seem to find either their morals or their happiness seriously affected by elementary and fundamental facts concerning living things. Today Huxley 's heresy of sixty years ago has become an orthodox platitude; but the problems of protoplasm still hold us fast with a gripping interest that has lost nothing of its force With the flight of time. In what light do Huxley 's conclusions appear after the bio logical progress of half a century? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from On the Physical Basis of Life The following remarkable discourse was originally delivered in Edinburgh, Nov. 18th, 1868, as the first of a series of Sunday evening addresses, upon non-religious topics, instituted by the Rev. J. Cranbrook. It was subsequently published in London as the leading article in the Fortnightly Review, for February, 1869, and attracted so much attention that five editions of that number of the magazine have already been issued. It is now re-printed in this country, in permanent form, for the first time, and will doubtless prove of great interest to American readers. The author is Thomas Henry Huxley, of London, Prof. of Natural History in the Royal School of Mines, and of Comparative Anatomy and Physiology in the Royal College of Surgeons. He is also President of the Geological Society of London. Although comparatively a young man, his numerous and valuable contributions to Natural Science entitle him to be considered one of the first of living Naturalists, especially in the departments of Zoology and Paleontology, to which he has mainly devoted himself. He is undoubtedly the ablest English advocate of Darwin's theory of the Origin of Species, particularly with reference to its application to the human race, which he believes to be nearly related to the higher apes. Excerpt from The Origin of Life: Its Physical Basis and Definition Theory and experiment must go hand in hand, and much depends on one as much as on the other, not merely upon its accuracy but also upon its nature. Hundreds of experiments may be made, which, how ever, notwithstanding their refinement and accuracy, contribute little to the march of human progress in the right direction they may of course in ages count for much, but the chief thing is that the experiment Should be of the right kind, and it is often desirable that as much time, if not even more time, should be spent in deciding upon the right thing to be done than in doing that thing itself. One bad theory is often worse than ten bad experiments, because even if these are properly carried out, they may yet, if based upon false notions, add little or nothing. Excerpt from The Physical Basis of Mind: Being the Second Series of Problems of Life and Mind According to my original intention, this volume was to have included an exposition of the part I conceive the brain to play in physiological and psychological processes, but that must be postponed until it can be accompanied by a survey of psychological processes which would ren der the exposition more intelligible. Excerpt from The Physical Basis of Mental Life: A Popular Essay A considerable part of the following essay formed the subject-matter of a lecture deliver ed in Leicester last November to the members of the Literary and Philosophical Society, and the public generally of that city. The time appears to me opportune for an appeal in brief form to a still larger public in favour of princi ples of mental science, of the truth of which a long course of observations, extending over the best years of my life, has rendered me fully convinced. As these years have been chiefly passed in Germany and Austria, the German language and literature have become more familiar to me than those of my father-land. It has been in those countries, moreover, that my collection of casts of the heads of eminent men, criminals.
