On Rigidity And Finiteness Theorems For Holomorphic Mappings Of Complex Hyperbolic Manifolds

This monograph studies the problem of characterizing canonical metrics on Hermitian locally symmetric manifolds X of non-compact/compact types in terms of curvature conditions. The proofs of these metric rigidity theorems are applied to the study of holomorphic mappings between manifolds X of the same type. Moreover, a dual version of the generalized Frankel Conjecture on characterizing compact K„hler manifolds are also formulated.

This volume presents papers dedicated to Professor Shoshichi Kobayashi, commemorating the occasion of his sixtieth birthday on January 4, 1992.The principal theme of this volume is “Geometry and Analysis on Complex Manifolds”. It emphasizes the wide mathematical influence that Professor Kobayashi has on areas ranging from differential geometry to complex analysis and algebraic geometry. It covers various materials including holomorphic vector bundles on complex manifolds, Kähler metrics and Einstein-Hermitian metrics, geometric function theory in several complex variables, and symplectic or non-Kähler geometry on complex manifolds. These are areas in which Professor Kobayashi has made strong impact and is continuing to make many deep invaluable contributions.

In Chapter 1 the author discusses Emile Borel's proof and the classical Jensen theorem, order of growth of entire analytic sets, order functions for entire holomorphic mappings, classical indicators of orders of growth, and entire functions and varieties of finite order. Chapter 2 is devoted to the appearance of curvature, and Chapter 3 considers the defect relations. The author considers the lemma on the logarithmic derivative, R. Nevanlinna's proof of the defect relation, and refinements of the classical case.

Many parallels between complex dynamics and hyperbolic geometry have emerged in the past decade. Building on work of Sullivan and Thurston, this book gives a unified treatment of the construction of fixed-points for renormalization and the construction of hyperbolic 3- manifolds fibering over the circle. Both subjects are studied via geometric limits and rigidity. This approach shows open hyperbolic manifolds are inflexible, and yields quantitative counterparts to Mostow rigidity. In complex dynamics, it motivates the construction of towers of quadratic-like maps, and leads to a quantitative proof of convergence of renormalization.

This monograph explores the problem of boundary regularity and analytic continuation of holomorphic mappings between domains in complex Euclidean spaces. Many important methods and techniques in several complex variables have been developed in connection with these questions, and the goal of this book is to introduce the reader to some of these approaches and to demonstrate how they can be used in the context of boundary properties of holomorphic maps. The authors present substantial results concerning holomorphic mappings in several complex variables with improved and often simplified proofs. Emphasis is placed on geometric methods, including the Kobayashi metric, the Scaling method, Segre varieties, and the Reflection principle. Geometry of Holomorphic Mappings will provide a valuable resource for PhD students in complex analysis and complex geometry; it will also be of interest to researchers in these areas as a reference.
