Excerpt from Old Christie's Cabin Within a quarter of a mile of the Thames, in the neighbourhood of Barnes and Putney, are still standing some of the old houses that, a century ago, were inhabited by the wealthy of the land. To-day they still tell the tale of their past glories. Many are surrounded by high walls, which enclose the stately trees of many years' growth, and in not a few can be seen the weird-looking branches of a cedar of Lebanon. In one of these houses lived old Mr. Ferrers, and there he had lived alone, since the wife of his youth had been taken from him some years before. Excerpt from The Cabin He just made it, and now he's getting rid of his scare by scolding about it, said California John. He's telling them what he'd do if he was only as big as they are. Curious what a dif ference size makes. Imagine an island where all the big animals would be little, and all the little animals big! I bet the lion would hunt his hole as quick as any of the bunch! Excerpt from My Year in a Log Cabin He had a passion for nature as tender and genuine and as deeply moralized as that of the English poets, by whom it had been nourished; and he taught us chil dren all that he felt for the woods and fields and open skies; all our walks had led into them and under them. It was the fond dream of his boys to realize the trials and privations which he had painted for them in such rosy hues, and even if the only clap-boarded dwelling on the property had not been occupied by the miller, we should have disdained it for the log-cabin in which we took up our home till we could build a new house. Excerpt from Pictures and Stories From Uncle Tom's Cabin Oh missus! Dear missus! Don't think me nu grateful; don't think hard of me. I am going to try to save my boy; you will not blame me! God bless and reward you for all your kindness! Hastily folding and directing this, she went to a drawer and made up a little package of clothing for her boy, which she tied firmly round her waist; and so fond is a mother's remembrance, that even in the terrors Of that hour she did not forget to put up in the little package one or two of his favour ite toys. On the bed lay her slumbering boy, his long curls falling negligently around his unconscious face, his rosy mouth half Open, his little fat hands thrown out over the bed-clothes, and a smile spread like a sunbeam over his whole face. Poor boy! Poor fellow! Said Eliza, they have sold you, but your mother will save you yet. It was some trouble to arouse the little sleeper; but after some effort he sat up, and began playing with his wooden bird, while his mother was putting on her bonnet and shawl. Excerpt from The Wigwam and the Cabin First Series The Tales which Mow have been the accumulation of several years. They were mostly written for the annuals, - an expensive form of publication which kept them from the great body of readers. In this form, however, they met with favour, and it is thought that their merits are such as will justify their collection in a compact volume. The material employed will be found to illustrate, in large degree, the border history of the South. I can speak with confidence of the general truthfulness of its treatment The life of the planter, the squatter, the Indian, and the negro - the bold and hardy pioneer, and the vigorous yeomen - these are the subjects. In their delineation, I have mostly drawn from living portraits, and, in frequent instances, from actual scenes and circumstances within the memories of men. More need not be said. I need not apologize for the endeavour to cast over the actual, that atmosphere from the realms of the ideal, which, while it constitutes the very element of fiction, is neither inconsistent with intellectual truthfulness, nor unfriendly to the great policies of human society.
