Viewing the countries surrounding the Indian Ocean as a distinct region united by instabilities as well as mutual interests, these essays examine whether stability in the region will be achieved through the buildup of military strength and the formation of new cooperative security arrangements. The contributors focus on the five subregions--the Persian Gulf, South Asia, the Red Sea and Horn of Africa, Eastern and Southern Africa, and Australasia. Among topics discussed are: developments that affect the region, including expansion of navies; the prospect for arms limitation; the implications of the Iranian Revolution for the Persian Gulf as well as for its internal stability; the political and economic ramifications of the South Africa/black Africa animosity; the religious, ethnic, and political conflicts of southern and eastern Asia; and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Excerpt from The World's History, Vol. 2: A Survey of Man's Record; Oceania, Eastern Asia, and the Indian Ocean Thus all non-european or foreign regions have been treated in a manner commensurate with their importance. In the preface to our third volume we have already insisted on the vast importance of Oriental history, a branch of learning hitherto strangely neglected and disparaged. In View of the rarity of authorities to whom we can appeal for corroboration in this connection, it will not be out of place to quote the words with which Gustav strakosch-grassmann prefaced his valuable work on The Irruption of the Mongolians into Central Europe in 1241 and published in the spring of 1893. He justly observes that a fuller knowledge will only be made possible by more strenuous study of the Oriental historical writings, in which lie buried so many precious contributions to the history of mediaeval Europe. A systematic examination of Oriental records would yield a harvest of new information to the student of history, in details hitherto neglected, bearin g upon the relations between Oriental and European nations. The Indian Ocean is famously referred to as the "cradle of globalization," as it facilitated cultural and economic exchanges between Africa, the Arab world, the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and China, for 5000 years prior to European presence in the region. As this ocean's significance has gained increasing attention from scholars in recent years, few have examined the 'human' dimensions in Indian Ocean exchanges. Including the work of historians, geographers, anthropologists and literary analysts, each essay in this volume addresses a specific human factor, such as the fate of the creole in the Bay of Bengal, creolization as a globalized phenomenon, migrancy and diaspora, the lives of seafarers then and now, and the lives of those who inhabit the ocean's littoral. This volume is a necessary addition to the field of Indian Ocean studies.
