The New Perspective on Mary and Martha gives Mary and Martha a total makeover. No longer is this familiar passage about prioritizing spiritual pursuits over the tyranny of the practical. The results of a close reading of the text and careful exegesis of the Greek has Martha escaping the kitchen and Mary is not even in the house! Martha is still overly worried, not about housework, but over the much more understandable concern about her (younger) sister. Mary, who is out of the village, follows her call, ministering on the road with Jesus. Luke 10:38-42 is about discipleship, ministry, trust, and the new family of Jesus.

Lazarus?s sisters. One was stunning. The other stable. One was scandalous. The other bitter. One dangerous. The other no-nonsense. But there were things they shared: a family cursed with dark secrets and betrayal. The desperate longing to be loved. The fear of change. The fear that things would remain the same. Both shared a desperate need for a Savior. In this brilliant retelling of an old story, you?ll find yourself in the middle of a household plagued with problems?yet privileged to know Jesus of Nazareth. Author Patty Froese Ntihemuka weaves together the story of a sister who is a reformed prostitute, a sister hardened by ordinariness, a brother touched by death, a Pharisee uncle committed to maintaining appearances, and a Redeemer who changes everything.

ReJesus asks the following questions: * What ongoing role does Jesus the Messiah play in shaping the ethos and self understanding of the movement that originated in him? * How is the Christian religion informed and shaped by the Jesus that we meet in the Gospels? * How do we assess the continuity required between the life and example of Jesus and the subsequent religion called Christianity? * In how many ways do we domesticate the radical Revolutionary in order to sustain our religion and religiosity? * How can a rediscovery of Jesus renew our discipleship, the Christian community, and the ongoing mission of the church? These questions take us to the core of what the church is all about. Rather than reformation, the authors call their task re-founding the church because it raises the issue of the Church's true Founder or Foundation. This theme is of particular importance at the dawn of the twenty-first century as many attempt to address Christianity's endemic and long trended decline in the West. The authors feel that a spiritual, theological, missional, and existential crisis looms in the West.

An invitation for overachievers to discover what it means to rest as God's daughters without compromising their God-given design as doers. Are you a Martha who feels guilty for not being a Mary? Do you want to sit at Jesus’s feet as Mary did—but you feel the need to get things done? In Made Like Martha, Katie M. Reid invites you to exchange try-hard striving for hope-filled freedom without abandoning your doer’s heart in the process. Through her own story and rich biblical illustrations, Katie reminds you that it’s not important whether you sit and listen or stand and work. What matters is that your spiritual posture is one of a beloved daughter who knows she doesn’t need to earn God’s love. Your desire to get things done is not something to temper but something to embrace as you serve from a place of strength and peace—knowing Christ already did His most important work for you on the cross. With “It Is Finished” activities at the end of each chapter and a fiveweek Bible study included, Made Like Martha helps you find rest from striving even as you celebrate your God-given design to “do.” “Made Like Martha will infuse your life with a fresh perspective as you learn both to embrace your God-given personality and also discover how—and when—to rest and retreat.” —Karen Ehman, Proverbs 31 Ministries speaker and New York Times bestselling author of Keep It Shut

Luke 10:38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village, and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. This short story in the Book of Luke indicates that Martha, Mary, Lazarus, and Jesus were dear friends. It is possible they met at her house often. There is a middle eastern tradition of hospitality to strangers. So it is also possible travelers were accorded hospitality at Marthas as well. I chose Marthas house as the place where stories were shared and expanded those stories. It is exciting to flesh these stories out with characters that might have been there, telling their stories as well. These stories are fun and interesting to read and they make great dramas. Read and enjoy them, or create dramas from them. You will receive a perspective on the Bible that is both thrilling and personally enlightening.
