Oh that those who seek to care for the sheep and lambs of the flock to-day were more characterized by the love and self-abnegation that marked this dear servant of God, whose spirit was not soured by rejection as ours often is, but whose love was only the deeper as the objects of it heaped upon him insult and ignominy. In this, how like the true Man of Sorrows! In fact, so marked is this, that the rabbis have sought to find in Jeremiah the patient Sufferer of Isa. 53. To only One, as we know, can such words really apply; but it speaks volumes for Jeremiah's loving endurance in his deep, deep grief, that he should be the "other man" (Acts 8:34) whom Christ-rejecting doctors put in the very place of the Holy Sufferer of Calvary. May we be more and more conformed to His blessed ways down here, who "has left us an example that we should follow His steps."

Jeremiah and Lamentations tell the story of God's judgment during a bleak period in Judah's history. While painting a vivid picture of human loneliness and suffering, these Old Testament books also reveal the beautiful hope found only in God. This twelve-lesson Bible study begins with a thorough examination of Jeremiah, one of the most autobiographical books in the Bible. By studying the “weeping prophet” and his faithfulness to his calling, who or what you obey will become clearer. The final chapter examines Lamentations, its lyrical style, and the deep sorrow its life-changing lessons convey. Includes: • 12 lessons • Questions for group discussions or personal reflection • Study aids

Jeremiah and Lamentation are at once a prophecy of the desolation of Judah but a history of it. Jeremiah is called the weeping prophet. He cries for a nation that rejected God to the point that they could not turn back to God. The nation believed false prophets even when they were shown to be false. This is the cause for his weeping and we see his frustration which is a picture of the frustration that God had for Israel. We can also note that many of Christ's illustrations were taken from Jeremiah. The reader is encouraged to make that comparison and put them in the notes pages that are provided. I would also note a comparison with today. It is a study that in we can see even in our society.

The books of Jeremiah and Lamentations cannot be separated from the political conditions of ancient Judah. Beginning with the righteous king Josiah, who ushered in a time of glorious but brief religious reform, Jeremiah reflects the close tie between spiritual and political prosperity or disaster, between the actions and heart of Judah and her kings and their fortunes as a nation. While few of us today have any firsthand understanding of what it means to live in a theocracy, the central theme of Jeremiah and Lamentations remains clear and still holds true: God first, politics second. The words, prayers, and poems of 'the weeping prophet' serve to realign us with God's priorities, turning us from evil and encouraging us to pursue God and his ways. With emotion and spiritual depth, these prophetic writings beckon us toward a spiritual integrity that can still affect the course of individuals and nations today. Most Bible commentaries take us on a one-way trip from our world to the world of the Bible. But they leave us there, assuming that we can somehow make the return journey on our own. They focus on the original meaning of the passage but don't discuss its contemporary application. The information they offer is valuable--but the job is only half done! The NIV Application Commentary Series helps bring both halves of the interpretive task together. This unique, award-winning series shows readers how to bring an ancient message into our postmodern context. It explains not only what the Bible meant but also how it speaks powerfully today.
