Devastating losses caused by diseases such as smallpox led to an epidemic of bereavement among the Natives. This loss resonated with the French, who had dealt with smaller epidemics in France and were also mourning their absent communities through a nostalgia for home. Blum traces how ghosts provided transgenerational and transcultural links that guided understanding rather than encouraging violence. Ghost Brothers insightfully examines the process of this colonial interdependent alliance between Native and European worlds.

This study examines one possible socio-cultural explanation for the events which took place in Somalia in early 1993, asking to what extent military culture (particularly the culture of the Canadian Airborne Regiment) affected the behaviour of Canadian soldiers there. The study methodology included examination of visual and written records as well as extensive interviews with Canadian Forces personnel involved in those events. The study is organized into sections reflecting the factors affecting the events discussed: contradictions within the military establishment, the culture and organization of the Airborne combat unit, and the situational contingencies that arose from the external environment in Somalia (physical, social, and cultural).

Precious and Few is a lively and nostalgic look back at the forgotten era of pop that gave us "Hooked on a Feeling", "Dancing in the Moonlight", "I Am Woman", "Seasons in the Sun", and more. The early 1970s brought a "Convoy" of popular rock music--everything from cheesy to the classic. The authors of Precious and Few, Don Breithaupt and Jeff Breithaupt, true-blue '70s fanatics, have put together this irresistibly readable book to transport readers back to a time when people wore smiley-face buttons, went to singles bars, and heartily sang along with Mac Davis.Illustrations throughout.

In their concepts, buildings, and designs submitted for competitions, as well as in theory in their teaching, Bettina Götz and Richard Manahl investigate the relationship between architecture and the creation of high-quality urban environments. They give special attention typologies and structures, social aspects. Strong building concepts and their interplay with the urban context and the inhabitants' individual spatial demands are also of great importance in the work of their firm ARTEC Architekten. Ever since founding their firm in 1987, Götz and Manahl have contributed significantly to architectural discourse in Austria and abroad. Housing, a typology fundamentally shaping the city, is the core of their work. This manifesto-like book introduces the reader to the thinking and visions of ARTEC Architekten. It features a vast selection of projects, built and unrealized ones, through images and floor plans and sections, alongside six programmatic essays by Götz and Manahl. The book's design demonstrates visually what the texts elaborate upon in theory: their attitude to architecture's core topics, their design methods, and their ongoing engagement with history and present of habitation.
