Having had opportunities of witnessing the ravages and unmanageable character of this destructive disease, I have long and deeply felt the want of some written account, both of the malady, and of a proper mode of treatment. Some research and observation, made in consequence of this feeling, have terminated in the acquisition of more fixed ideas, and of a practice hitherto successful. This convinced me, that it became my duty to lay the result of these inquiries before the public, for the benefit of others. There is, perhaps, no stronger and more peculiar reason for wishing American physicians to write, than the opportunities they possess, of describing and recording many important varieties of morbid affection, which were either unknown to our predecessors, or the descriptions of which, uncombined and uncompared, are only to be found by searching among the more neglected tomes of a public library. Of this, the present case will afford a fair example; as well as an instance of an American physician, who had described the disease from nature, having, from want of encouragement, false modesty, or some other cause, kept it back from publication. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. That there is a direct communication between the parent and child; and proved, as I think, conclusively, by the direct and successful ex periments of several most ingenuous and most reputable anato mists; whilst the opposite opinion is sustained by negative experi ments alone, in the hands of others. Excerpt from The North American Medical and Surgical Journal, Vol. 11: January and April, 1831 We commence with the Ospedale dell' finnunziata, or the foundling hospital. This establishment was founded in 1304, by Nicholas and James Scondito, richly endowed by Sancia, the wife of king Robert, in 1309, and greatly enlarged by queen Joanna the Second, in 1348. The building presents an im posing appearance, and is large in all its dimensions. The latter circumstance, indeed, owing to the objects for which the house was erected, was indispensable; for the hospital may be regarded as a triple institution, one part of which is destined for the accommodation of the foundlings and their nurses; a second, as an infirmary for such of the former as are affected with disease; while a third is reserved for the reception and maintenance of all the girls who have been received during their infancy in the establishment, and have been fortunate, or perhaps unfortunate enough, to survive.
