More than half the species of birdlife occurring on the Southern African subcontinent are found in the Kruger National Park. Besides the enormous variety of birdlife, the park provides consistently fine viewing, and is therefore a prime destination for birdwatching enthusiasts from Southern Africa and beyond. Designed for easy reference and maximum rewards, this guide includes more than 280 of the birds you are most likely to see while in the Kruger National Park and adjacent reserves. All the birds are illustrated with Ken Newman's paintings, while the text mentions other similar-looking birds. The text gives authoritative information about preferred habitat and characteristic calls and behaviour. The guide includes: descriptions of the birds with subheadings which guide you to the information you are looking for - status, description, call, behaviour, habitat and distribution; a speedy alphabetical index to bird groups; a guide to the natural habitats in the Kruger Park.

This edition of the South African classic, Newman's Birds of Southern Africa, has been revised and updated to reflect the latest research. In particular, insight into bird taxonomy based on DNA testing and other, ongoing research has led to the addition of 46 new species, including a section on larks and albatrosses, together with illustrations. The familiar, user-friendly format of Newman's birds has been retained, and subtly modernized. Colour coding of major bird groups has been retained; and at the top of each page is classified by which family of birds is being described. Large page numbers and bold, cerise numbers alongside bird illustrations make for easy cross-referencing with the appropriate text; and, as always, large, accurate paintings of each species reflect the bird as it is seen in the field. Where necessary, updated maps reflect new distribution records, which, for greater clarity of presentation, are now aligned with their species description.

South Africa's Kruger National Park is one of the largest and most iconic conservation areas in Africa. Habitats range from wide-open savannah and rugged thornveld to broadleaved mopani woodland. This microhabitat variation gives Kruger a phenomenal diversity of some 520 bird species, half of which are resident. From Africa's most extraordinary eagles, like the scarlet-faced Bateleur, to electric-colored glossy-starlings and jewel-like finches, Kruger offers an avian celebration of form and color. It is also a crucial conservation area, supporting South Africa's largest viable populations of vultures, eagles, and large terrestrial birds. This field guide offers a unique window into the world of Kruger's birds. More than 500 stunning color photographs illustrate the 259 most frequently encountered species, and a habitat-based approach assists in identification.
