Excerpt from New York Medical Journal and Medical Record, Vol. 115: A Semimonthly Review of Medicine and Surgery; Gastroenterological Number; June 7, 1922 This work is the outcome of a series of experimental investigations covering a period of thirty-three years into the problems of the function of all that cerebral area which is situated in front of the presylvian fissure. The present volume is devoted to general doctrines, to the experimental aspects of the subject, and to an initial phase of anatom ical psychology, postponing the analysis of clinical cases to another occasion. Professor Bianchi sets forth the outstanding points in the physiology of the cerebral mantle, reviews the doctrines of the localisations, and defines the functional relations between the cerebral mantle, the zone of language, and the frontal lobes. Many will agree with his statement that mental development always involves development of the brain. He has now adduced cogent evidence in support of the further contention that higher mental development is correlated with the activity of the frontal brain.
