This book is a collection of invited talks, oral contributions and poster contributions devoted to advances in nuclear physics. This is the proceedings of the symposium on Frontiers of Nuclear Structure Physics which was held from March 2-5, 1994, in honor of Akito Arima. Nuclear structure physics is approaching a new era owing to various recent developments such as radioactive nuclear beams, multiple gamma-ray detectors, massive parallel computers, etc. In the near future RHIC, CEBAF and other facilities will further extend the horizons of the field and this meeting offered a look at these exciting possibilities ahead. Topics discussed included (i) new trends in shell model, (ii) electroweak interactions in nuclei, (iii) unstable nuclei, (iv) Interacting Boson Model, (v) proton-neutron degrees of freedom in nuclear collectivity, (vi) quarks in hadrons and nuclei, (vii) nuclear astrophysics, (viii) nuclear and atomic clusters.

In preparing the program for this Conference, the third in the series, it soon became evident that it was not possible to in clude in a conference of reasonable duration all the topics that might be subsumed under the broad title, "High Energy Physics and Nuclear Structure. " From their initiation, in 1963, it has been as much the aim of these Conferences to provide some bridges between the steadily separating domains of particle and nuclear physics, as to explore thoroughly the borderline territory between the two - the sort of no-man's-land that lies unclaimed, or claimed by both sides. The past few years have witnessed the rapid development of many new routes connecting the two major areas of 'elementary par ticles' and 'nuclear structure', and these now spread over a great expanse of physics, logically perhaps including the whole of both subjects. (As recently as 1954, an International Conference on 'Nuclear and Meson Physics' did, in fact, embrace both fields!) Since it is not now possible to traverse, in one Conference, this whole network of connections, still less to explore the entire ter ritory it covers, the choice of topics has to be in some degree arbitrary. It is hoped that ours has served the purpose of fairly exemplifying many areas where physicists, normally separated by their diverse interests, can find interesting and important topics which bring them together.

International Conference on Nuclear Structure presents the status of research in nuclear structure. This book covers the more traditional topics, including giant resonances, high-spin states, current and momentum distributions in nuclei, and single particle and collective excitations at low excitation energy. Organized into eight sessions, this book begins with an overview of the experiments with low momentum antiprotons. This text then examines the interaction between two free nucleons, which can be described by their scattering matrix, by their scattering cross sections, or by relativistic or nonrelativistic potentials. Other sessions consider the results on neutron-hole states in the Zr, Sn, and Pb region from pic-up measurements. This book discusses as well the progress in the investigation of high-spin magnetic observables in medium and heavy nuclei. Nuclear structure physics is undergoing a major revival, full of activities and excitement. On the experimental side, this is being made possible by advances in detector technology and accelerator capabilities that give access to data and nuclei (especially exotic nuclei far from stability) never before accessible. On the theoretical side, new concepts, ideas and computational techniques are advancing our understanding of effective interactions, nucleonic correlations, and symmetries of structure.This volume covers a broad range of topics on nuclear structure, including collective excitations, proton-neutron excitation modes, phase transitions, signatures of structure, isospin, structure at both high and low angular momenta, recent developments in nuclear theory, the vast new realm of exotic nuclei far from the valley of stability, and the latest technological advances of detectors and facilities which will lead this branch of physics into the future.

This seminar focuses on recent achievements and new goals of nuclear structure in both experiment and theory. Several topics at the forefront of current research in this field are covered by major experts. The main themes are: exotic nuclei; the present role and perspectives of the shell model; modes of excitation in deformed and superdeformed nuclei; and nuclear astrophysics.

The interest in understanding the physical world that we live in, the origin of its formation and evolution, is reflected in the world-wide activities in Europe, the USA and Japan to set up powerful research facilities providing beams of radioactive nuclei of various kinds, and beams of extremely large energies. At the same time, complex and large detector arrays with improved technical capabilities are built either around these facilities or independently (dedicated to cosmic rays). Recently, spectacular progress has been made in superheavy nuclei, cold binary and ternary fission, nuclear shell structure and nuclear astrophysics, to mention only a few directions. The energy spectrum of cosmic rays exceeds the upper limits provided by artificial accelerators. An international collaboration has committed itself to the installation of an extremely large area detector array, AUGER, in order to study the highest particle energies in the Universe.
