Excerpt from Natural History, Sport, and Travel On arrival in England after spending the best part of my life in the Bengal Civil Service, I was cautioned, on the risk of being voted a bore, never to mention India; and the proprietor of one of the leading journals, who for many years has taken great interest in literature connected with the east, on hearing that I proposed writing a book about India, warned me that I had no chance whatever in securing readers in England, unless I told my story briefly, and in the lightest possible style. Excerpt from Collections and Recollections of Natural History and Sport: In the Life of a Country Vicar The Field about Natural History, Angling, Otter hunting, and Yachting tours, encouraged [me to think that he might be right, and the publication of the present work is the result. As I have made many water-colour sketches of all the various places that I visited, and of the birds and insects that I have collected, it was an easy matter to illustrate it. There is nothing very startling, novel, or scientific in it. It is a narrative of out-door observations; but the truth of everything asserted may be depended upon, as I have put down nothing but what I can verify by my own personal observation. I have endeavoured throughout to place the reader in my own situation so that he might see with my eyes, and feel my feelings. It remains to be proved whether my book can effect this at all. At any rate it has been an amusement to me to write it. I hope It may be an amusement to some to read it. Excerpt from Ten Years Wild Sports in Foreign: Lands or Travels in the Eighties The exploration or adventure, which I have included in this volume of my travels, will at least serve the purpose of comparing the different countries described from a sporting point of view, from the fact of their having been the experience of a single individual, within the short period of a decade, and partly in the intervals of a military service which included a campaign. If from a literary point of view the chapters appear to be of varying, and I hope increas ing merit, that fact must be ascribed to the different epochs at which they were written. Some have been condensed from my contributions to certain periodicals with the kind permission of the Editors, such as those of Land and Water, Tile Alpine Journal, and The Field. I can at least claim for them the advantage of strict fidelity to fact, and of having been mostly penned upon the spot. Excerpt from The Cabinet of Natural History and American Rural Sports, Vol. 2: With Illustrations William Bartram, in answer to Joseph Banks' propo sal, says, that there are not over five hundred species of plants altogether in the provinces of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, West and East Florida, and Georgia, which, at one shilling each, amounts only to 25 - supposing every thing acceptable. It has taken him two years to search only part of the two last pro vinces, and finds by experience it cannot be done with to lerable conveniency for less than 100 a year, therefore it cannot reasonably be expected that he can accept the offer.
