National Shoreline Study Shore Management Guidelines

In 1968 the 90th Congress authorized a National appraisal of shore erosion and shore protection needs. Beach and shore erosion are recognized as a concern for all levels of government and for all citizens. This publication provides information to assist in developing and implementing shore management programs. This is a three-part presentation covering the municipal level, metropolitan-county level, multi-county level and State level in the first part; shore management procedure in the second part and the planning to improve management and engineering techniques is discussed in the third part. In 1968, the 90th Congress authorized this national appraisal of shore erosion and shore protection. To satisfy the purposes of the authorizing legislation, a family of 12 related reports has been published. They are: Regional inventory reports; Shore protection guidelines; Shore management guidelines; and Report on the national shoreline study. This report presents an inventory of the physical characteristics, historical changes, and ownership and use of the coastal shorelines of Washington and Oregon, including major bays and estuaries.
