Money And Credit In An Indigenous African Context

In the course of Africa's economic development several types of money and multiple financial systems have evolved. This book examines the opportunities created by such diversity. The book analyses the supply of commodity money and attempts to apply conventional theories of demand to this type of money; examines the relative efficiency of commodity money and flat money; explains the impact of commodity money on the economy; and it analyses theories of interest and dividend payments on savings and loans in indigenous money and capital markets. The book pays particular attention to the organisation and functioning of the institutions involved in the informal commodity and financial money, capital and insurance markets, as well as the constraints that they face. It also points out the limitations of key non-indigenous financial institutions and compares and contrasts them with indigenous financial entities. In light of those limitations, the inability of the non-indigenous financial system to fully articulate the the indigenous African financial culture and adequately address the financial needs and interests of its clients, the book proposes an alternative Pan African financial system that is pro-poor. The book draws on various studies on the subject matter of money and credit based on research done in Western, Eastern, Central and Southern Africa.

FinTech is a major force shaping the structure of the financial industry in sub-Saharan Africa. New technologies are being developed and implemented in sub-Saharan Africa with the potential to change the competitive landscape in the financial industry. While it raises concerns on the emergence of vulnerabilities, FinTech challenges traditional structures and creates efficiency gains by opening up the financial services value chain. Today, FinTech is emerging as a technological enabler in the region, improving financial inclusion and serving as a catalyst for the emergence of innovations in other sectors, such as agriculture and infrastructure.

Generally, books addressing the early history of African American banks have done so either within the larger construct of African American business history and economic development, or as a starting point to explore current issues related to financial services. Focused considerations of these early institutions and their founders have been relatively rare and somewhat scattered. This publication seeks to address this issue.

Informal economic activity, defined as exchanges made by individuals and organizations in extra-legal or non-bureaucratic contexts, represents a significant and growing share of global economic activity. The informal economy brings to mind images of street vendors in markets and bazaars throughout the developing world; indeed, informal economic activity ranges from 25-75% of economic activity, depending on the country under study. Informal activity also includes "under the table," or "off the books" business in the developed world, such as informal labor arrangements in child care, construction, or home cleaning in the United States or Western Europe. What many fail to realize, however, is the increasing presence of informal economic activity in the developed world’s largest corporations and most innovative entrepreneurial ventures, such as technology development work in Silicon Valley, open source software agreements, or employment arrangements between "technology stars" and firms. The book does more than illuminate, however – it also calls for increased focus on the informal economy by management scholars. This book examines an indigenous Africa-centric business model practised by the Igbos of south-eastern Nigeria for decades.
