Excerpt from Modern Scottish Writers IN bringing together the following papers, my object has been to direct attention to the merits of some modern Scottish writers. So far as I am aware, no book has been devoted entirely to these representative mena The significance of their personalities as well as of their works I have endeavoured to emphasise in a manner clear enough, I hope, to incite a renewed interest in them. One or two writers are excluded for the reason that they are not modern in outlook; some have been left out of account, either because their reputations are not firmly established, or their works are not of sufficient importance to warrant considera tion. These studies make no claim to be comprehensive, but perhaps they may convey an indication of what the authors and their. Excerpt from Manual of Modern Scots The idea of this work first occurred to one of the authors, Dr Main Dixon, in the course of his experience in lecturing on Scottish Literature to his students in the University of Southern California. He felt the need of a book to which he could refer them for details of Scottish Grammar and Pronunciation, which he could employ, in class, for the recitation of our literary masterpieces, and which the students themselves, after they left the University, could use either for purposes of declamation or teaching. The book is divided into three parts. Part I describes the sounds of Modem Scots with examples of their use written in the alphabet of the International Phonetic Association. Part II contrasts Scots Grammar with Standard English usage and gives copious illustrations from Modern Scottish Literature. Part III consists of a series of extracts from Modern Scots writers and a selection of ballads and songs with phonetic transcriptions. Most of these transcriptions are in Standard Scottish Speech (see Introduction, p. xxi); Extracts XII A, XIII A, XVI A, XVII A, IX B, XiV B, may be described as Standard Scottish with local colour; Extracts VII A, XIV A, XX A, XXII A, XXIV A, are intended to represent the exact speech of definite sub-dialects. Excerpt from Modern Scottish Poets: With Biographical and Critical Notices The race of song and ballad-makers are more for tunate than their brethren of earlier times in the in creased opportunities opened to them by the art of printing for having their productions sown broadcast over the country. How vastly different it is now in such matters is attested by the publication of number less collections of miscellaneous verse which in other times would have died in the utterance. Mr Edwards has taken immense trouble to raise scores of poets from local obscurity into the light and glory which can only be secured in palpable volume form. The humblest song and name is carefully preserved with the best and the highest. The work 18 starred by names already well known in shining poetic fields, and it contains songs and ballads which will give their little-known authors a fair place among the heaven-born makkers of their country. We could pick out many names for high praise in the volume names that have already sung them selves into popular affection, and others that are beginning to catch the ear, like larks in the early dawn. There is still in Scotland a fine, fresh, and vigorous undergrowth of poetry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Book of Scottish Song: Collected and Illustrated With Historical and Critical Notices, and an Essay on the Song-Writers of Scotland This work was undertaken with the object of laying before the public, in a single volume, and at a moderate price, a coupnsnsusxva gomcrros or run 801103 or scotland, ancient and modern, accompanied with such particulars regarding their history, age, or authorship, as could be gathered from the liter ary records of the country, or might be elicited from personal inquiry and research among the lovers of song. It may excite surprise to know, but nevertheless it is undeniable, that no publication of the kind here aimed at, whether as regards extent of design in text and commentary, or adaptation in size and price for general circulation, has hitherto been attempted, amid the multifarious song-collections that have issued from the press. Ritson, near the close of the last century, was the first, as an editor of Scottish song, who endea voured to ascertain the age and authorship of the pieces in his work, and his example has been followed by one or two other editors; but the compilations adverted to are at once limited in their range, and removed by their cost be yond the reach of ordinary purchasers. Ritson's collection did not, in all, amount to more than our. Nusnnnn and monrr songs, and the collections of succeeding editors, though in some instances extending to several volumes, do not in any case contain om; half of the number of songs given in the present publication. Excerpt from Northern Numbers: Being Representative Selections From Certain Living Scottish Poets His collection does not pretend to be in any sense anthology of contemporary Scottish poetry. It merely consists of representative selections (chosen by the contributors themselves) from the - mainly current -work of certain Scottish poets ofto-day - and to-morrow! Many contemporary writers of the highest merit, whose work will unquestionably be given a place in any future anthology of Scottish poetry embracing the output Of the twentieth century, have not been invited to contribute to this volume. The chief reason for that lies in the fact that for the most part the contributors to this volume are close personal friends, and that this is rather an experiment in group-publication than an anthology. Group-poetry developments have been a marked feature of recent British publishing. Success has largely justified the method. It is hoped that the present volume may do for some of the leading tendencies in contemporary Scot tish poetry what the Georgian Poetry series has done for a particular group of mainly-english poets of our period. If this venture is sufficiently successful, subsequent volumes (which it is hoped will permit of the inclusion of poetical dramas as well) will be published at convenient intervals. N 0 new contributor will, however, be admitted without the approval of a majority of the present group. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Literature of the Highlands Owing to the close affinity that subsisted between the different Celtic nationalities in the earlier periods of their literary activity, it was possible for me in my former book to treat of their literature as a whole. The greater divergence of production among these peoples in more recent times renders it desirable and even necessary that their literary history during this modern period should be detailed in separate volumes.
