Fuzzy logic controllers were first applied in parallel to the FLPI so to capture the benefits of both the conventional established theory and the advantages of the fuzzy logic Simulations showed that the hybrid FLPI/Fuzzy controllers have added negligible improvement to the performance of the FLPI used alone.--Then, fuzzy controllers are designed based on neural network architecture, the Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Inference System. These fuzzy controllers showed comparable performance to the FLPI controllers and were able to adapt to disturbances other than the ones applied during the training process. One advantage of the fuzzy controllers over the FLPI is the less, and readily observable, number of inputs it required, compared to the conventional FLPI controller.--This thesis showed the efficiency of using neural network as a structure for designing fuzzy controllers able to meet the required specifications in a highly non?linear wind-diesel plant, and be comparable to conventional robust controll.
