Excerpt from The Philosophy of Missions: A Present-Day Plea Some portions of this little book - about one-third of the whole - appeared a few months ago in a series of papers in the Christian World, the object having been to show the continued necessity for Missionary work under the new conditions of the time. These papers having awakened interest in various quarters, it has been suggested that some service to the Missionary cause might be rendered by publishing them in their present and considerably expanded form. While the claims of Foreign Missions generally evoke a warm response, they yet fail, in too many cases, to enlist that intelligent sympathy which, as the grandest of the Church's ministries, they should everywhere secure. This want of interest is, no doubt, due, in part, to the unsettlement of theological thought; more largely, perhaps, to a misapprehension of the nature of Missionary work in the present day, and to a very limited grasp of the reasons that should impel us, as British Christians, to prosecute it. Excerpt from The Empire of Christ: Being a Study of the Missionary Enterprise in the Light of Modern Religious Thought This book is an attempt to re-state, in terms which are in harmony with our altered theological thought and our changed social outlook, the old but abiding responsibility of the Church for the salvation of the world. It is an endeavour to make distinct and definite that vision of empire which was in the mind of the Church's greatest seer, when he gave expression to the first century's anticipation of the final century's realisation, and formulated for her the phoenix song of her ultimate triumph The kingdoms of this world have become the empire of our God and of His Christ. The picture which is here presented has, been painted under a Western sky, with the shifting clouds and expanding stretches of blue, whichare characteristic of our present theological thought. The landscape, however, is Eastern, taken from the India of the author's acquaintance, and requires, therefore, to be looked at with a due regard to relativity. Feeling the attraction \of the. Excerpt from Modern Missions: Their Evidential Value; (Cole Lectures for 1896) The subject selected for this cause of lectures by the Faculty extending the invitation is my apology for accepting a service for which, by taste and training, I have an unaffected sense of unfitness. The subject, and not the position, though most honorable, constrained my acceptance and accounts for my appearance. Having recently enjoyed the privilege of inspecting several of the great mission fields of the world, it seemed incongruous that I should positively decline, however meager might be my contribution to the discussion of so exalted a theme. The subject contemplates not so much a plea for Missions as a study of Missions, not so much an enforcement of obligation as a report of the results of investigation. It is hoped, however, that the report and its study will prove a persuasive plea for Missions and an additional enforcement of our divine indebtedness to the Christless world. Excerpt from Questions and Phases of Modern Missions It has been one of the mistakes of the Church that she has not sufficiently counted upon the action and cooperation of a present and abiding Provi dence. Supernatural forces are freely recognized in the past, but current history is assigned to nat ural causes. The written Gospel of the First Cen tury is indeed the wisdom of God and the power of God unto salvation, but that is not all of the divine resources. We have the deposit of truth and in spiration given nineteen centuries ago, but we have also a living Savior, and an overruling Spirit whose superintendence directs human progress along all lines.
