Excerpt from Literary Studies, Vol. 1: A Collection of Miscellaneous Essays The present final collection of his miscellaneous papers, originally written for, and printed in the American Monthly Magazine, Arcturus, the Church Record, the Democratic and Whig Reviews, Boston Miscellany, Union Magazine, Literary World, and other periodicals, is intended to include such of the writer's papers (chiefly of literary criticism) as have appeared to him worthy of preservation. With the exception of a few comparatively recent articles, they were mostly written and printed 1838-1845, and comprise a little more than one-half of his entire contributions to the press up to the present date. Most of the papers here collected (since the publication of The Analyst, anonymously in 1839, and which was made up of lucubrations written the year and a half previously) have appeared already in the volumes of Literary Studies and Essays upon Authors and Books. Holding the doctrine of Hazlitt, however, to be sound, that a first edition is as good as MSS., as the impressions of all these three miscellanies were limited, and have been long since out of print, and as numerous typographical errors had crept in, as well as mistakes of fact and opinion, it was thought a new and correct edition might be favorably received by the present generation of readers, young students in particular, in college, the lovers of the choice old English literature, and those cultivated general readers to whom these miscellanies are unknown. Excerpt from Miscellaneous Essays The reception of two preceding volumes of essays - the one published about eighteen, the other about twelve months ago - has encouraged me to collect and issue a third. I had been somewhat doubtful what audience there might be for papers written in a perhaps unfashionable manner, and putting forward no claims except the modest ones of a good deal of reading, and an attempt to consider that reading from a uniform and definite point of view. Ive may apply to him what Den ham, with great felicity, says of Cowley. He wears the garb but not the clothes, of the ancients. Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays, Vol. 1 Paradise Lost without suspecting him of the former; nor do we think that any reader, acquainted with the history of his life, ought to be much startled at the latter. The opinions which he has expressed respecting the nature of the Deity, the eternity of matter, and the observation of the Sabbath, might, we think, have caused more just surprise. Excerpt from Critical and Miscellaneous Essays: Collected and Republished; Vols. I. And II Of his Life of Richter these preliminary observations may be our excuse for saying but little. He brags much, in his Preface, that it is all true and genuine; for Richter's widow, it seems, had, by public advertisement, cautioned the world against it; another biography, partly by the illustrious de ceased himself, partly by Otto, his oldest friend and the appointed Editor of his Works, being actually in preparation. This rouses the indignant Spirit of Doring, and he stoutly asseverates that, his documents being altogether authentic, this biography is no pseudo-biography. With still greater truth he might have asseverated that it was no biography at all. Well are he and Hennings Of Gotha aware thatthis thing of shreds and patches has been vamped together for sale only. Except a few letters to Kunz, the Bamberg Bookseller, which turn mainly on the purchase of spectacles, and the jour neyings and freightage of two boxes that used to pass and repass between Richter and Kunz's circulating library; with three or four notes of Similar importance, and chiefly to other booksellers, there are no biographical documents here, which were not Open to all Europe as well as to Heinrich Doring. Indeed, very nearly one half of the Life is occupied with a description of the funeral and its appendages - how the sixty torches, with a number of lanterns and pitchpans, were arranged; how this Patrician or Professor followed that, through Friedrich Street, Chancery Street, and other streets of Bayreuth; and how at last the torches all went out, as Dr. Gabler and Dr. Spatzier were perorating (decidedly in bom bast) over the grave. Then, it seems, there were meetings held in various parts of Germany, to solemnize the memory of Richter; among the rest, one in the Museum of Frankfort-ou Mayn; where a Doctor Berne speaks another long Speech, if possible in still more decided bombast. Next come threnodies from all the four winds, mostly on very Splay-footed metre. The whole of which is here snatched from the kind oblivion of the newspapers, and lives in Settle's numbers one day more. Excerpt from Miscellaneous Essays: Second Series Maintained that the former were generally right and the objects they aimed at were at all events desirable and probably attainable; while it was confidently urged that the artisans might be trusted to under stand and manage their Own interests better than their masters could do for them. The experience Of the last two years, and more especially the disastrous proceedings of 1878, have lowered the confident tone of the soberer among the workmen's friends, and brought about, more speedily than I had hoped, and far more painfully than I could wish, a recognition of many facts once noisily denied, and justified assuredly nearly all the neglected warnings of Cassandra. The state of trade has been stagnant, gloomy, and disastrous in the extreme, and it cannot be denied that much Of its deplorable condition has not been immediately traceable to the specific causes which I pointed out as so ominous in the approaching times. But still less can it be controverted - indeed it is almost universally admitted - that this condition has been enormously aggravated by the almost incredible blunders and perversity of the working classes them selves, all the more disheartening because the true facts and bearings of the case have been fairly and anxiously laid before them by friends whose sincere and well-proved sympathy should have secured at least a patient hearing.
