"As is often noted, 'everyone talks about the weather, but no one does anything about it.' Not Bill Hooke! His thoughtful analysis of actions that we need to take to reduce the impacts of extreme weather is a must-read for everyone with an interest in the weather and climate." --Franklin W. Nutter, president, Reinsurance Association of America.

This book looks at the circulation features of the Southern Hemisphere, both for the atmosphere and oceans. It includes observational techniques based on satellites, anchored and drifting buoys, and the research carried out at research stations in the Southern Hemisphere. The book was originally published in 1972 by the American Meteorological Society. It has been revised and updated in 1999, following the expansion of research bases and the development of research in the region at the time.

This long-anticipated monograph honoring scientist and teacher Fred Sanders includes 16 articles by various authors as well as dozens of unique photographs evoking Fred's character and the vitality of the scientific community he helped develop through his work. Editors Lance F. Bosart (University at Albany/SUNY) and Howard B. Bluestein (University of Oklahoma at Norman) have brought together contributions from luminary authors-including Kerry Emanuel, Robert Burpee, Edward Kessler, and Louis Uccellini-to honor Fred's work in the fields of forecasting, weather analysis, synoptic meteorology, and climatology. The result is a significant volume of work that represents a lasting record of Fred Sanders' influence on atmospheric science and legacy of teaching.

This book if a tribute to one of the leading scientists in meteorology, Dr. David Atlas. It was written by a group of specialists and presented at a symposium to honor Dr. Atlas’ life and career as meteorologist. It serves as a comprehensive resource for scientists and educators, and also as an inspiring historical record of scientific research and important discoveries in the field of meteorology.

Interest in the meteorology of the stratosphere and mesophere has been simulated in the past few years by concerns over possible depletion of the ozone layer as a result of reactions involving pollutants introduced by human activities. Concurrently there has been an upsurge in research on various aspects of the meteorology of the stratosphere. This monograph provides an account of the fundamental dynamical processes which control the general circulation of the stratosphere and mesophere and are thus responsible for the transport of trace substances in that region of the atmosphere. Principles necessary for understanding the dynamics of large-scale motions in the stratosphere and mesosphere are systematically developed so that this monograph should prove useful not only as a reference work for research scientists, but as a textbook for courses in dynamic meteorology of the upper atmosphere.

"Ice crystals, with their myriad shapes, sizes and densities, play an important role in the formation, evolution and subsequent impact of ice and mixed-phase clouds on weather and climate. There are numerous pathways through which ice crystals nucleate, grow and dissipate. Although many of these are understood theoretically and have been simulated in the laboratory and cloud chambers, they are less well documented in natural clouds. The challenges of making measurements from moving platforms in an environment that is spatially inhomogenous and temporally unsteady, as well as sometimes at high altitudes and in clouds with icing potential makes these clouds difficult to observe. Nevertheless, the importance of ice clouds on climate and the hydrological cycle compels us to better understand ice processes through improved measurements over as broad of a temporal and geographical scale as possible. This monograph represents a collection of articles that do exactly that."-- Book jacket.
