It is rather matter of surprise that they should have so long remained unpublished. In preparing this work for the press, the editor has had two principal points to attend to the selec tion of the most interesting, from a large mass of unpublished materials; and the illustration of what has been selected, with notes. In executing the former part of' his task, he trusts that. Nothing of higher interest has been omitted: in the latter, opi nions will vary according to the extent of information, or the means of access to it, possessed by different readers.
