Excerpt from The Florentine Histories, Vol. 1 of 2 For: three hundred years the Florentine Histories have been regarded with veneration by the scholars of Europe. It is one of those few works to which the judgment of successive generations has assigned a high place in the annals of the world. It has been consulted by the student of History to explore the majestic ruins of the Roman empire, for the origin of all modern states-by the philosopher to trace the progress of light and liberty, as they travelled down through the gloom of the middle ages - by the vindicators of man and of truth, to read the story of their servitude, their struggles and their triumphs. Excerpt from The Florentine History, Vol. 1 of 2 When first I resolved to write the History of the affairs, foreign and domestic, of the Florentine people, my intention was to begin my narrative from the year of our Lord 1434, at which date the House of Medici, through the merits of Cosimo and of his father Giovanni, obtained greater authority in Florence than any other family in that city. For I thought to myself that Messer Lionardo of Arezzo and Messer Poggio, both of them admirable historians, must have recorded at length all that had taken place before that time. But afterwards, having diligently studied their writings with a View to learn what order and methods they had followed, and by imitating these make my own History more attractive to the reader, I found that while they had been most circumstantial in their account of the various wars waged by the Florentines against foreign Princes and Peoples, as regards civil discords and intestine feuds, and the effects following from them, they had either been wholly silent or had treated them so briefly as to afford the reader neither pleasure nor profit. (this course I believe them to have taken, either because they thought such matters too trivial for written record or else through fear of offending the descendants of those persons whom, in writing of them, they would have had occasion to. To whom should we ascribe the great flowering of the arts in Renaissance Italy? Artists like Botticelli and Michelangelo? Or wealthy, discerning patrons like Cosimo de' Medici? In recent years, scholars have attributed great importance to the role played by patrons, arguing that some should even be regarded as artists in their own right. This approach receives sharp challenge in Jill Burke's Changing Patrons, a book that draws heavily upon the author's discoveries in Florentine archives, tracing the many profound transformations in patrons' relations to the visual world of fifteenth-century Florence. Looking closely at two of the city's upwardly mobile families, Burke demonstrates that they approached the visual arts from within a grid of social, political, and religious concerns. Art for them often served as a mediator of social difference and a potent means of signifying status and identity. Changing Patrons combines visual analysis with history and anthropology to propose new interpretations of the art created by, among others, Botticelli, Filippino Lippi, and Raphael. Genuinely interdisciplinary, the book also casts light on broad issues of identity, power relations, and the visual arts in Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance.

Excerpt from Medals of the Renaissance The leading works on other branches of the art are, I believe, fairly indicated in the footnotes and in the bibliography. Ferha s I should apologize for the frequency of the references to books an articles of my own. My excuse must be that, since I have now for many years been trying to fill up the gaps necessarily left in their work by the pioneers, t ese references are required to complete the bibliographical a paratus, until the time comes for a book which will gather up all the scattered material. The materials for such a book have for over fifteen years been accumulating in my hands but since 1914 some of the most fruitful sources have been cut off, so far as men of my generation are concerned, and what I had hoped would be a corpus will, if it ap ears at all, be but an imperfect torso.
