Excerpt from Mechanics, Indoors and Out So said Jessie Gregg, a rosy-cheeked girl of twelve, to her eldest brother, Fred, one evening in March, as they stood in the porchway of their home, situated near the bank of the Passaic River, a few miles from the city in which Mr. Gregg had his business offices. Gregory's Classical Mechanics is a major new textbook for undergraduates in mathematics and physics. It is a thorough, self-contained and highly readable account of a subject many students find difficult. The author's clear and systematic style promotes a good understanding of the subject: each concept is motivated and illustrated by worked examples, while problem sets provide plenty of practice for understanding and technique. Computer assisted problems, some suitable for projects, are also included. The book is structured to make learning the subject easy; there is a natural progression from core topics to more advanced ones and hard topics are treated with particular care. A theme of the book is the importance of conservation principles. These appear first in vectorial mechanics where they are proved and applied to problem solving. They reappear in analytical mechanics, where they are shown to be related to symmetries of the Lagrangian, culminating in Noether's theorem.

Excerpt from Home Mechanics for Amateurs A work of this character possesses equal merit with one entirely completed before the death of the author. As a rule such works have not had the ad vantage of the final perusal and correction by the author. Such has not, however, been the case in the present. Instance, for the following work by the late George M. Hopkins, was completed before his death. Tl ere is no doubt, however, that this volume will come as a surprise to thousands who have closely followed Mr. Hopkins' work, and who have enjoyed making the many experiments described by him. The present volume contains much matter which has never before appeared in print, and some articles which have al ready been published in the Scientific American. The object of the work is to furnish food for thought to the amateur, and to give him suggestions whereby he may pass many pleasant hours in his work-shop. Mr. Hop kins was an expert mechanic. One of his chief pleas ures was to make experiments at'his home in his well equipped work-shop and laboratory, and the work described in the present volume is nearly all the result of experiments made by him during such idle hours. It has been the intent of the author to make the present. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The new edition of a classic text that concentrates on developing general methods for studying the behavior of classical systems, with extensive use of computation. We now know that there is much more to classical mechanics than previously suspected. Derivations of the equations of motion, the focus of traditional presentations of mechanics, are just the beginning. This innovative textbook, now in its second edition, concentrates on developing general methods for studying the behavior of classical systems, whether or not they have a symbolic solution. It focuses on the phenomenon of motion and makes extensive use of computer simulation in its explorations of the topic. It weaves recent discoveries in nonlinear dynamics throughout the text, rather than presenting them as an afterthought. Explorations of phenomena such as the transition to chaos, nonlinear resonances, and resonance overlap to help the student develop appropriate analytic tools for understanding. The book uses computation to constrain notation, to capture and formalize methods, and for simulation and symbolic analysis. The requirement that the computer be able to interpret any expression provides the student with strict and immediate feedback about whether an expression is correctly formulated. This second edition has been updated throughout, with revisions that reflect insights gained by the authors from using the text every year at MIT. In addition, because of substantial software improvements, this edition provides algebraic proofs of more generality than those in the previous edition; this improvement permeates the new edition.

Excerpt from Popular Mechanics Shop Notes for 1912, Vol. 8: Easy Ways to Do Hard Things; Of Daily Use to Every Mechanic; Table of Contents, Pages 1639-1645 It will not jar off, and the metal can be filed right up to the line, which makes it especially useful to tool-mak ers. To prepare the metal, simply put it in the fire, preferably inside of a piece of pipe, and heat it anywhere from a blue to a dull red. Then cool it quickly in water. This leaves the sur face blackened and. Lines scratched on it show up bright and clear, and the contrast between the black and the bright, clean-cut line is agreeably marked - Contributed by D. Excerpt from The Amateur Mechanic I might qualify the above statement by saying that if you are an amateur it will pay you to scan the following pages before you try to do mechanical things. The idea I have tried to carry out is to parallel the case of the locomotive engineer. You know, of course, that he did not build the engine he drives but he knows every part of it, exactly how it works, how to run it to get the most power, or speed, or both, out of it with the highest fuel economy and, further, if he should have a breakdown on the road he knows just how to make whatever repairs are needed to go on with his run. Excerpt from Lessons in Applied Mechanics The present volume consists in great measure of selections from the matter contained in a larger treatise 1 on the same subject, of which it may there fore in a certain sense be described as an abridged edition. The portions selected have, however, been completely rearranged and rewritten in fuller detail with much additional illustration, and the whole con sequently forms a virtually new book, which, being smaller in compass and more elementary in Character, may, it is hoped, serve as an introduction to the larger work, and meet the wants of junior students. Excerpt from Mechanics for the Upper School Considerable space is devoted to practical applications. Throughout the book there are references to the automobile, the airplane, the base-ball curve and other familiar subjects. Indeed some may be disposed to criticise the amount of attention given to these matters, especially in the chapter on machines. But they are all interesting illustrations of mechanical principles and are of the greateet interest to our young people. For these reasons they are included, certainly not to supply material for written examinations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
