How might the world as we know it end? In this illustrated guide, How Stuff Works author Marshall Brain explores myriad doomsday scenarios and the science behind them. What if the unimaginable happens? A nuclear bomb detonates over a major city, for example, or a deadly virus infects millions around the world. There are other disasters we don’t even have to imagine because they’ve already occurred, like violent hurricanes or cataclysmic tsunamis that have caused horrific loss of life and damage. In The Doomsday Book, Marshall Brain explains how everything finally ends—the decimation of nations and cities, of civilization, of humanity, of all life on Earth. Brain takes a deep dive into a wide range of doomsday narratives, including manmade events such as an electromagnetic pulse attack, a deadly pandemic, and nuclear warfare; devastating natural phenomena, such as an eruption from a super-volcano, the collapse of the Gulf Stream, or lethal solar flares; and science-fiction scenarios where robots take over or aliens invade. Each compelling chapter provides a detailed description of the situation, the science behind it, and ways to prevent or prepare for its occurrence. With fun graphics and eye-catching photographs at every turn, The Doomsday Book will be the last book you’ll ever have to read about the last days on Earth. Scenarios include: - Asteroid Strike: a massive asteroid could obliterate life—just as it might have killed the dinosaurs. - Gray Goo: self-replicating nanobots engulf the planet. - Grid Attack: an attack on our power grid shuts down the internet, affecting airports, banks, computers, food delivery, medical devices, and the entire economic system. - Gulf Stream collapse: the shutdown of this important ocean current causes temperatures to plummet. - Ocean acidification: if the oceans’ pH levels shift due to a rise in carbon dioxide, all marine life could die.

The Hidden Manna has become a classic on Eucharistic teaching. Now in a second edition, accompanied by a new introduction by Fr. Kenneth Baker, a new preface from the author, new material from John Paul II, and the original foreword by Cardinal John O'Connor, this in-depth study lets the breadth and richness of the Church's Tradition speak for itself. Fr. O'Connor presents and comments on substantial excerpts from the major sources of the Church's Tradition extending all the way back to apostolic times. Focusing on the doctrine of the Real Presence, he follows the earliest witnesses through the challenge in the Middle Ages of Berengarius through the Protestant Reformation and modern disputes. ಜFather James O'Connor gives us nothing less than a comprehensive study of the Church's meditation on the Mystery of the Eucharist... The Hidden Manna is a superb work.ಝ Cardinal John OಙConnor ಜ...We owe a debt of gratitude to Fr. James OಙConnor for writing this beautiful treatise on ಘthe Sacrament of Sacramentsಙ. The Hidden Manna is a remarkable accomplishment of Catholic scholarship.ಝ Fr. Kenneth Baker, S.J.

These devotionals were written during the weariest, most difficult days of my life. As the song says, "Life is hard, but God is good." Some of these devotionals are synopses of sermons I have preached over the years. Others are simple thoughts I have entertained and enjoyed as I reviewed and meditated upon various Scripture Memory verses. There is at least one devotional based on a text from every book of the Bible. The reader will find almost as many entries written from Old Testament texts as from the New Testament. This book has been demanding, but it has also been a labor of love. A great missionary once said, "I'm just a beggar, telling other beggars where to find bread." That is exactly how I feel as I share this work with you. I am on the way to heaven and offering hope to others on the journey. May these devotionals bless your heart, feed your soul, and nourish your thoughts. Jesus has set a table for two. He invites you to dine with Him (Revelation 3:20). Pull away, weary pilgrim. Hunger no longer. His morning manna awaits you. "O taste and see the Lord is good" (Psalm 34:8). As they say at the Mexican restaurant, "Enjoy "

The founder of HowStuffWorks.com uses objectivity, logic, and critical thinking to explore the question of God’s reality in an honest way. Does God exist? Using an intellectually rigorous, scientific approach, Marshall Brain—the founder of HowStuffWorks.com and author of the How Stuff Works series—sets out to resolve the eternal debate once and for all. With a compelling sense of curiosity, he breaks down mankind’s search for a higher power, tackling such quandaries as: Who is God? What are his attributes? What is God doing and why? How does God interact with humanity? And ultimately, how can humans know with certainty whether God is real or imaginary? How “God” Works is an enlightening journey in critical thinking that challenges readers to boldly approach the subject of personal faith and put aside intuition in favor of objectivity and logic. “Takes readers on a journey of critical thinking . . . it is the combination of all the arguments made and the approach to those arguments that make this book so convincing.” —Skeptic Ink “Brain subjects Christianity to withering analysis . . . He is precise and convincing in his analytical process.” —TheHumanist.com

WINNER SCIENCE FICTION DIY BOOK FESTIVAL 2011-2012 "Avogadro Corp is a tremendous book that every single person needs to read. In the vein of Daniel Suarez's Daemon and Freedom(TM), William's book shows that science fiction is becoming science fact. Avogadro Corp describes issues, in solid technical detail, that we are dealing with today that will impact us by 2015, if not sooner. Not enough people have read these books. It's a problem for them, but not for the [emergent] machines." -- Brad Feld, managing directory Foundry Group, co-founder Techstars "Highly entertaining, gripping, thought inspiring book. Don’t start without the time to finish — it won’t let you go.” -- Gifford Pinchot III, founder Bainbridge Graduate Institute, author THE INTELLIGENT ORGANIZATION "An alarming and jaw-dropping tale about how something as innocuous as email can subvert an entire organization. A 365+ Day Biblical Devotional After 15 years of attending a Men's Bible study with my friends Wheeler and Paul, I decided to do an independent study of my own. I spend an hour each morning investigating real, tough, modern day biblical questions. After I get done, I try to distill the answers into a "Bible Minute" with a short introduction of the topic, a Bible verse or two or three and a short conclusion. I began posting these Bible Minutes on my Facebook page and before long I began to see true miracles. I heard stories of conversions, breakthroughs and restoration of relationships as a result of my studies. Make no mistake; I'm an average guy who just likes reading the Bible. I attended Bible College but after less than a year, I decided that my true calling was being a chiropractor so I'm no biblical scholar. I hope that my compiling the many studies I have done over the last few years and creating this book helps heal your soul, brings you closer to God, and allows you to grow a deeper relationship with Jesus. It is my prayer that this book provides the manna for your spirit, sets your soul free and becomes a true blessing in your life and in the lives of the people you gift this book to. In Health and Faith, Jay
