Managerial Issues And Strategies For Rural Urban Migration Of Agricultural Labourers

This book examines rural-urban migration policies in China, and considers how Chinese workers cope with migration events in the context of these policies. It explores the contribution of migrant workers to the Chinese economy, the impact of changes within the ‘hukou’ system (household registration) and the impact of recent migration policies promoting rural-urban migration and targeting key events during migrant workers’ migration trajectories - job-seeking, wage exploitation, work injuries and illness - namely the corresponding ‘Skills Training Program for Migrant Workers’, the ‘Circular on Managing Wage Payment to Migrant Workers’, the ‘Circular on Migrant Workers Participating in Work-Related Injury Insurance’, and the ‘New Rural Medical Cooperative Scheme’ (Health Insurance). Through in-depth interviews, it examines how when facing such challenges, migrant workers choose to either make a claim under existing policies, or use other coping strategies. The book notably proposes a typology of “coping” which includes a variety of administrative coping, political coping and social coping, and considers how workers in China harness the power of civil groups and social networks.

This will assess the different steam’ of migration at all Indian levels over a decade. Rural-urban migration is a natural phenomenon in any society. It takes special attention in developing countries where industrialization is in progress and economic activities are rising. As a result of rapid economic growth for the past few decades, since the initiation of economic reforms in 1990, India has been experiencing the rapid urbanization flow from rural to urban migration. Urban population growth in developing countries is far more rapid than the population growth generally, about half the urban growth is accounted for by migrants from rural areas.

Circular migration has become the enduring mobility pattern of the poor in agriculturally marginal areas of India. This volume deals with millions of unskilled and semiskilled poor who migrate away from the rural region in search of jobs that are mostly in the informal organized sector. It studies migration using different conceptual frameworks intended to provide coherence across the studies in order to draw out policy conclusions. With case studies pulled together from some of the poorest and most deprived parts of India, this volume shows how important migration has become in sustaining and improving rural livelihoods.

The objective of this study is to investigate the linkage between migration and livelihood diversification with emphasis on the socio-economic and structural processes that impact on rural to urban migration. The specific objectives include: to explore the factors affecting rural to urban migration by focusing on household assets and social attachment variables; to examine the different ways by which migration affects rural households' livelihoods and vice versa; to examine rural-urban linkages using migration with the aim of contributing to efforts to understand the migration process in the Amhara region; and to investigate the impact, direct or indirect, of government policy on trends of rural to urban migration in Ethiopia.

This paper studies the response of agricultural production to rural labor loss during the process of urbanization. Using household microdata from India and exogenous variation in migration induced by urban income shocks interacted with distance to cities, we document sharp declines in crop production among migrant-sending households residing near cities. Households with migration opportunities do not substitute agricultural labour with capital, nor do they adopt new agricultural machinery. Instead, they divest from agriculture altogether and cultivate less land. We use a two-sector general equilibrium model with crop and land markets to trace the ensuing spatial reorganization of agriculture. Other non-migrant village residents expand farming (land market channel) and farmers in more remote villages with fewer migration opportunities adopt yield-enhancing technologies and produce more crops (crop market channel). Counterfactual simulations show that over half of the aggregate food production losses driven by urbanization is mitigated by these spillovers. This leads to a spatial reorganization in which food production moves away from urban areas and towards remote areas with low emigration.
