Major Voices

This book explores the dramatic thrust of each of Bach's four major works for choir and orchestra: Christmas Oratorio, St. John Passion, St. Matthew Passion, and Mass in B Minor. It guides the reader, movement by movement, through each work with an integrated presentation of commentary and text translation that pays particular attention to the interaction of text and music, suggesting reasons for Bach's musical choices.

California has always been America's promised land—for American Indians as much as anyone. In the 1950s, Native people from all over the United States moved to the San Francisco Bay Area as part of the Bureau of Indian Affairs Relocation Program. Oakland was a major destination of this program, and once there, Indian people arriving from rural and reservation areas had to adjust to urban living. They did it by creating a cooperative, multi-tribal community—not a geographic community, but rather a network of people linked by shared experiences and understandings. The Intertribal Friendship House in Oakland became a sanctuary during times of upheaval in people's lives and the heart of a vibrant American Indian community. As one long-time resident observes, "The Wednesday Night Dinner at the Friendship House was a must if you wanted to know what was happening among Native people." One of the oldest urban Indian organizations in the country, it continues to serve as a gathering place for newcomers as well as for the descendants of families who arrived half a century ago. This album of essays, photographs, stories, and art chronicles some of the people and events that have played—and continue to play—a role in the lives of Native families in the Bay Area Indian community over the past seventy years. Based on years of work by more than ninety individuals who have participated in the Bay Area Indian community and assembled by the Community History Project at the Intertribal Friendship House, it traces the community's changes from before and during the relocation period through the building of community institutions. It then offers insight into American Indian activism of the 1960s and '70s—including the occupation of Alcatraz—and shows how the Indian community continues to be created and re-created for future generations. Together, these perspectives weave a richly textured portrait that offers an extraordinary inside view of American Indian urban life. Through oral histories, written pieces prepared especially for this book, graphic images, and even news clippings, Urban Voices collects a bundle of memories that hold deep and rich meaning for those who are a part of the Bay Area Indian community—accounts that will be familiar to Indian people living in cities throughout the United States. Broken Voices is the first English-language book on Korea’s rich folksong heritage, and the first major study of the effects of Japanese colonialism on the intangible heritage of its former colony. Folksongs and other music traditions continue to be prominent in South Korea, which today is better known for its technological prowess and the Korean Wave of popular entertainment. In 2009, many Koreans reacted with dismay when China officially recognized the folksong Arirang, commonly regarded as the national folksong in North and South Korea, as part of its national intangible cultural heritage. They were vindicated when versions from both sides of the DMZ were included in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity a few years later. At least on a national level, folksongs thus carry significant political importance. But what are these Korean folksongs about, and who has passed them on over the years, and how? Broken Voices describes how the major repertoires were transmitted and performed in and around Seoul. It sheds light on the training and performance of professional entertainment groups and singers, including kisaeng, the entertainment girls often described as Korean geisha. Personal stories of noted singers describe how the colonial period, the media, the Korean War, and personal networks have affected work opportunities and the standardization of genres. As the object of resentment (and competition) and a source of creative inspiration, the image of Japan has long affected the way in which Koreans interpret their own culture. Roald Maliangkay describes how an elaborate system of heritage management was first established in modern Korea and for what purposes. His analysis uncovers that folksong traditions have changed significantly since their official designation; one major change being gender representation and its effect on sound and performance. Ultimately, Broken Voices raises an important issue of cultural preservation—traditions that fail to attract practitioners and audiences are unsustainable, so compromises may be unwelcome, but imperative.

Francesco Gasparini composed his Mass for Five Treble Voices for the figlie di coro (a famous all-female ensemble) at the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice. Gasparini had become the Pietà’s first full-time maestro di coro in 1701, and the mass was likely written early in his tenure. It is unusual in its lack of a bass part (scored for CCCAA with organ) and its inclusion of all five parts of the mass Ordinary (by 1700 most Venetian concerted masses fit the profile of the missa brevis, consisting solely of a Kyrie and Gloria). The work offers valuable insight into the ospedale repertoire, since a great deal of Venetian sacred music from this period has been lost. Based on an autograph manuscript, this edition makes Gasparini’s mass available to scholars interested in sacred music of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries and enriches the repertoire for treble and women’s choruses.

Real Encounters with Thousands Flown in and Trafficked at National Football Championship Games. Every year during the National Football Championship game, fans inside the stadium shout and cheer for their teams. Meanwhile, screams outside the stadium are silenced by violence against our missing and abused children, our abandoned women, and our vulnerable boys. Human trafficking has plagued society for centuries. Major sporting events are the largest venues for trafficking. Thousands of fans fly into hosting cities, creating a high demand for escort services. To meet the demand, untold numbers of victims are brought in and sexually exploited. Ironically, our volunteers often fly on the same planes with pimps, prostitutes, and victims. Our volunteers meet them. We hear their names. We listen to their stories. We pray with them in strip clubs, brothels, and on the streets. We bind bleeding mouths and witness broken hearts. We leave with their mascara on our shirts. We fly them to safety. This book gives voice to those outside the stadium. You will witness suffering and hear testimonies. Their silence has echoed over the years; now they're speaking out to our volunteers.
