Excerpt from Lyrics of the Dawn Hammarizere There's a city called Hammarizere, In a lovely land that I will not name; Where all of the round of the ruling year As a summer mere the skies are clear, And only the flowers of life take flame From the great white sun in the dazzling dome; And though dew ne'er gathers and rain ne'er falls, There are waters that circle the shining walls, And break into bubble and toss into foam Round the city called Hammarizere. There's a city called Hammarizere, Where every gate is jeweled with jade And opal, shimmering sphere on sphere; And the mounting pinnacles, each a spear Of welded marble, swim from a shade So tenebrous that the nightingales Sing all day long their love-despair, Making amorous the emerald air With the passionate burden of their tales, In the city called Hammarizere. It is nine years since I published a little book of verses, and if, in this small volume, I have failed to fulfil the promise some kindly critics assured me (and my youth) was held out by my first publication. Excerpt from Bird of Dawn, and Other Lyrics The work included herein has been done under difficulties. It is the grist of the years from the publication of Mary Magdalene and Other Poems, in 1914, until now. Some of the friends who inspired my work are dead, - grief has knocked at the door. Sam Wood, natur alist, has gone along. Emmanuel Tasse, of Ottawa, whose wife com posed and brought out our war song, died the following year. The Bridge of Gold was written for him whilst he was still with us. Of our boys who went to the war some of the dearest and best are dead or missing. My thanks to Dr. Watson for his nature poetry, which suggested my title piece, The Bird of Dawn. He made the first copy on his own typewriter in red letter. Again, to John Garvin, of Canadian Poets fame, that unwearying philanthropist to every one of us, genius or scribbler, a very personal feeling of kindness because of his tactful effort to find me work when I was poor and dejected. Excerpt from Songs of the Twilight and the Dawn Having consented to the venture of its publication, under the auspices of the Blackburn and District Authors' Society, the author himself Claims no special merit for the contents of the volume beyond saying that his desire has been to appeal more to the hearts of the general public than to the heads of scholars and critics, who, were they in ignorance of the fact that he had spent the greater part of his life in the close atmosphere of a cotton factory, and thus been debarred from the facilities for study which are the lot of people more favourably Circumstanced, might extend to him little mercy on account of his lack of culture. The author, also, must plead that the critically disposed may exercise a forbearance, if, in their casual glances into the contents of the volume, they should disviii. Introduction. Excerpt from Songs of Dusk and Dawn The earliest of these books was published by me when Iwas only sixteen years old and the next when I was nineteen. Of course these youthful efforts were very crude and all their lines bore marks of puerility and immaturity. Although the first two books contained together over six-hundred pages, composing the largest works, I believe, ever issued by a minor, I have reprinted from them only a few hundred lines. Excerpt from Choice English Lyrics The lark now leaves his watery nest And, climbing, shakes his dewy wings; He takes this window for the East, And to implore your light, he sings. Awake! Awake! The morn will never rise Till she can dress her beauty at your eyes. The merchant bows unto the seaman's star; The ploughman from the sun his season takes, But still the lover wonders what they are Who look for day before his mistress wakes. Awake! Awake! Break through your veils of lawn Then draw your curtains, and begin the dawn. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
