This book focuses on the issues of integrating large-scale renewable power generation into existing grids. The issues covered in this book include different types of renewable power generation along with their transmission and distribution, storage and protection. It also contains the development of medium voltage converters for step-up-transformer-less direct grid integration of renewable generation units, grid codes and resiliency analysis for large-scale renewable power generation, active power and frequency control and HVDC transmission. The emerging SMES technology for controlling and integrating large-scale renewable power systems is also discussed. Since the protection issues with large-scale distributed renewable power systems are different compared to the existing protection system for one way power flow, this book includes a new protection technique for renewable generators along with the inclusion of current status of smart grid. This book is a good reference for the researchers who are working the area of renewable power generation and smart grids.

Enhancing the integration of renewable power generation from wind and solar into the traditional power network requires the mitigation of the vulnerabilities affecting the grid as a result of the intermittent nature of these resources. Variability and ramp events in power output are the key challenges to the system operators due to their impact on system balancing, reserves management, scheduling, and commitment of generation units. This book presents development of energy management system for renewable power generation (EMSRPG) tool that aims to achieve power-dispatching strategies based on forecasting renewable energy resources outputs to guarantee optimal dispatch of hybrid wind-solar photovoltaic power systems (HWSPS). The key selling points of the book include the following: Renewable energy management in modern and future smart power systems Energy management systems Modeling and simulations using a real-time digital simulator (RTDS) High penetration level of renewable energy sources Case studies based on Oman’s power systems and other power grids This book discusses the challenges of integrating renewable resources, including low inertia systems, hosting capacity limitations of existing power systems, and weak grids. It further examines the detailed topologies, operation principles, recent developments in control techniques, and stability of power systems with a large scale of renewables. Finally, it presents case studies of recent projects from around the world where dispatchable power plant techniques are used to enhance power system operation.

The world's deserts are sufficiently large that, in theory, covering a fraction of their landmass with PV systems could generate many times the current primary global energy supply. Moreover, the energy produced is from solar radiation -- a clean and renewable source -- hence such systems would have the potential to contribute massively to the protection of the global environment. Energy from the Desert is an extensive and high-level international study, representing the accumulated research of the world experts involved in Task VIII of the IEA PVPS Programme. To date, the market focus for photovoltaics has been on small to medium, stand-alone or building-integrated power systems, which have proven, but as yet not realized, the great potential of this technology. This definitive study evaluates the feasibility, potential and global benefits of very large scale photovoltaic power generation (VLS-PV) systems deployed in desert areas and each generating from 10MW to several gigawatts.

This research work is on Short- and Long-term Stability of a 100% Renewable Autonomous Power System for a Typical Geographical Region. It is concerned with understanding, modelling, analysing and mitigating power system stability problems associated with 100 percent renewable electrical power system. The complexity of power systems is continually increasing because of the growth in asynchronous interconnections and use of new power electronic based technologies for solar and wind power integrations. At the same time, regulatory constraints have forced utilities to increase the renewable energy share on the power systems. This research mainly deals with maximizing the Non-Conventional Renewable Energy (NCRE) share in the power system. Implementation of 100 percent renewable electric power system is no longer a myth. However, the system requires a large energy storage capacity for full supply with renewable energy in the electricity sector and new large scale of synchronous inertia shall be added to the system for frequency stability. Furthermore, necessary measures have to be taken for maintaining power system oscillations and damping which occur due to frequent power disturbances from wind and solar energy sources. However, the implementation of 100 percent renewable electrical power system depends on the many other things such as the financial capability, resources availability, etc.

The fourth volume in the established Energy from the Desert series examines and evaluates the potential and feasibility of Very Large Scale Photovoltaic Power Generation (VLS-PV) systems, which have capacities ranging from several megawatts to gigawatts, and to develop practical project proposals toward implementing the VLS-PV systems in the future. It comprehensively analyses all major issues involved in such large scale applications, based on the latest scientific and technological developments by means of close international co-operation with experts from different countries. From the perspective of the global energy situation, global warming, and other environmental issues, it is apparent that VLS-PV systems can: contribute substantially to global energy needs become economically and technologically feasible soon contribute significantly to global environmental protection contribute significantly to socio-economic development This book recognises that very large scale solar electricity generation provides economic, social and environmental benefits, security of electricity supply and fair access to affordable and sustainable energy solutions and that VLS-PV systems must be one of the promising options for large-scale deployment of PV systems and renewable energy technologies.
