A history of Duplin County, North Carolina and its government. Duplin County was the seventeenth county established in North Carolina and chartered by the General Assembly in 1749. Thus it was one of the older counties and played an important role in the beginning of this country and our fight for freedom. Includes short histories and troop rosters for Confederate soldiers (The Duplin Rifles, Company C, 2nd Regiment N.C. Volunteers and Company E, 20th N.C. Regiment, Confederate Greys). A detailed, well-written county history whose only flaw is the lack of an index.

Chief among its contents we find abstracts of land grants, court records, conveyances, births, deaths, marriages, wills, petitions, military records (including a list of North Carolina Officers and Soldiers of the Continental Line, 1775-1782), licenses, and oaths. The abstracts derive from records now located in the state archives and from the public records of the following present-day counties of the Old Albemarle region: Beaufort, Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Halifax, Hyde, Martin, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell, and Washington, and the Virginia counties of Surry and Isle of Wight.

Ancestors include: Captain Edmond Scarborough (1584-1634) of North Walsham, England; and Virginia -- John Davis, a Revolutionary War soldier of Virginia; and his grandson, William Davis (1798-1870) of Georgia and Salem, Alabama -- Thomas Lockett (d. 1686) of England and Henrico County, Virginia.
